Now we are going to have to listen to the Brits whine again about the track because their #1 sled crashed.

Did you hear what the announcer said when Germany1 went for a dive? I don't recall the name, but he said there is a track in Germany where the first time it was used, 18 sleds in the first run crashed and in the whole competition, 39 ended up on the their sides/heads. He said the Germans know how to drive dangerous tracks - but our track wasn't dangerous, just fast.

The track in Germany that he mentioned was Altenberg, which was indeed very dangerous when it opened. It has been modified and is better today but it still gets the racers hearts beating fast.
The Olympics are about performing your best under difficult conditions. If it was easy, anyone could do it - and no one would watch. Yes it's tragic that the young Georgian luger died, but his father said it best when he said that it was nobody's fault and that Nodar died living his Olympic dream and that he had made an unfortunate mistake. The good news is that the federation will take the issue seriously and there will probably be some safety innovations as a result. It's an unfortunate fact that most safety improvements, from seat belts to air bags to front end crumple zones, are innovated as a result of a tragedy.A truly wise man never plays leapfrog with a unicorn.
