I think the number of possible related deaths is 12. They have had over 2,000 incidents of sudden accelerations as of Jan 30, 2010. Toyota said that they could only find 5% of those cases could be blamd on sticky gas pedals. This is why the States are after them because they can't explain all the other cases which can't be blamed on floor mats either and they have been slow to warn or fix the the problem. They refuse to except blame initially in essence. The other thing is that this problem has existed for seven years and they have had different manufacturers of the pedal in that time. Also, CTS, the company that made the present pedal said that there is nothing wrong with the pedal. This brings us back to the American's claims that it is a computer problem which a friend of mine, aformer Toyota mechanic, says is the problem. I tend to believe him since my own vehicle got great mileage for the first two months 45 mpg highway and then it suddenly, not gradually, dropped to 26-30 mpg highway, it varies. The chrome exhaust tip is constantly black from soot which tells me it is running rich.Last edited by 6ffightr9; Mon, Mar 1st, 2010 at 10:41 PM.

Here's a news quote.
But even the company's own supplier, Indiana-based CTS, says Toyota is far from done in ending the problem of runaway cars -- and that Toyota told it none of the serious accidents or deaths linked to runaway cars was caused by "sticky" gas pedals.
Whether or not sticking gas pedals are the cause of random acceleration in Toyotas, there are many reports of runaway Toyotas that are not on the list of models recalled by the company to replace the pedals.
Reports of the runaway Toyotas surged after the company began to use tiny computers to control acceleration, and as Toyota appeared to put more emphasis on cost cutting and less on its famed quality control.Last edited by 6ffightr9; Mon, Mar 1st, 2010 at 10:51 PM.

Here's another
GM says it will recall 1.3 million vehicles in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico over a malfunctioning power steering motor. Affected cars are 2005-2010 Cobalts, 2007-2010 G5's, and the 2006 Pursuit. Sent 10:20pm

I believe Toyota was originally blaming the sticking accelerator on the mats interfering with the pedal and issued a recall. In the interim they had a vehicle with the sticking accelerator and there were no mats in the vehicle so they got to the true root cause of the return system. I believe the return spring material corrodes then the spring fails. Someone didn't do their homework on the FMEA, they didn't count on salt corrossion testing on an interior part.
The brake issue was negligence or incompetence they did not put an algorythm in the software to put the engine into idle mode when brake was applied. We're getting into hybrids and electric vehicles so the mfg have to perform tricky software to replace manifold vacuum, hydraulics, pumps, etc. This wont be the last of these recalls, the industry has a big learning curve ahead of them.

That's why I believe in having black boxes being put into cars. The auto companies say it is cost prohibited but their just afraid of being found at fault and some drivers just don't want their driving habits known. Yet some manufacturers (high end) do have them in their autos

Are you sure? Better check the official rules:
http://www.shotgunrules.com/What do the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Titanic have in common?
They both look good until they hit the ice.
