i called my friend at the local humane society and they said that degus are prone to two things - respiratory infections and bloating /gas. You need to get him to a vet because apparently the infection can turn to pnemonia in a matter of hours for the lil guys. and rodents don't have the ability to throw up so they get ill quickly. hope it all works out for you! call this # if you have any more questions (they're in your area)

They are prone to diabetes thats why they are used for science research dealing with diabetes. I have no idea what the normal sugar level of a degu is, but if you can get a blood drop and check the level on someones meter, then see if it way off compared to a human or research degus on the internet.

Thank you soo soo much for the information, but I think I ran into a dead end
The first thing I did was when I got home was call the emergency vet clinics in Brampton, they could not help due to the fact that none of the vets on call where experienced in Degus!!
I then called one in Oakville, same story. They gave me a number for a clinic in Toronto, who were closed!!!
I think the poor little guy was pretty well gone at that point, but I wanted to see if there was any way of at least having him looked at.
They all basically told me the same thing; it was minimum $100 just to walk in the door and they probably could not help, except to most likely have him put down!!
HOW FRUSTRATING!!!!!
Never did get the glass of wine anyway, had to go pick my daughter up from work. Am now afraid to go and see how poor Tuft (the degu) is doing.
But Thank you again, I really do appreciate it
