My dear DH and I went to Shoppers Drug Mart in Stephenville yesterday. My hubby spotted a one step toilet bowl cleaner and the price was 11.99. There was a gentleman from the store nearby so hubby made a comment. " My wife bought one of these on sale for 7.99 and also had a 5.00 coupon" "Why is this price so high?"The man who turned out to be the owner replied ya we had to raise the price to compensate for those coupons. In other words they are still getting the regular 7.99 plus pocketing 4.00 from every 5.00 coupon and any of you buying there are paying the full price despite having your coupon.

SDM is usually more expensive because they dont buy in bulk like Walmart. And was 11.99 the sale price or regular price? Because you need to compare sale to sale.
And it's not really shocking, personally. Happens all the time with small stores in comparison to large stores. They also have the reward system to cover.

Walmart not only buys in bulk, they request the manufacturer to price their product at cost or below cost. The manufacturer does not make much money selling at Walmart, unless the customer buys in extraodrinary amounts, so the manufacturer can make a decent profit.
I agree with you about the comment about small stores.

I don't get why they would raise the price "to compensate for the coupons." Don't they get the full $5 back when they submit the coupons to the manufacturer?

Perhaps the owner was talking about "when" they get paid. If you pay in cash obviously the store has money to deposit today. Pay with credit card and they eat a few points fee and the money hits their account in a few days. Pay with coupons and payment could take months (as I understand it).
