I have helped a couple of newer members add an avatar / signature line over the last couple of weeks so thought I would post the instructions here to help anyone else wondering but not sure who to ask for help.
Avatars:
Avatars are a maximum of 100px wide and 100px tall. If you are not using a readymade avatar that size, you may have to resize your picture to fit within the guidelines.
You can easily shrink an image using this site (or on photo software on your computer if you have it): http://www.shrinkpictures.com/
and choose 100px as highlighted
Once you have the image sized correctly, you can add it to your profile
1. Click on User CP
2. Click on Edit Avatar
3. Click the browse button and choose your avatar from wherever you saved it (I always save mine to my desktop to find them easily then delete or move it after)
4. Click Save Changes
It will then appear below your name in your posts on SmartCanucks
Note: although there is an option to link to the picture above the browse button, please only do this if it is uploaded to your own webspace or online photo album. SC posts are viewed a lot and can eat the bandwidth of sites you link to.This thread is currently associated with: Canada Post

Signatures:
Signatures are very similar, please make sure you have checked out the rules about what can go in your signature
From the User CP menu used for Edit Avatars
Choose Edit Signature
Three boxes come up, the first is a preview of your current signature, the second is an edit box (which should be in WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) mode) and the third allows you to upload a picture to your signature. Please note that when uploading you can't add text in the edit box at the same time. It is one or the other.
So you can type in the box (so you will have text similar to mine below my post) and add a photo using the [IMG] BBCode format (not HTML) if you have an image you can link to (SC has picture hosting, or use photobucket, imageshack, tinypic etc). Or choose the second option and upload an image to your signature.
3. Click Save Signature
It will appear on your new posts (it does not show on old ones if you did not previously have a signature)

If you want to upload a photo or picture to use for a signature and add text (like my oompa loompas lol) you can use SC picture hosting (you can use this to post photos in any area of the forum)
(pictures borrowed from Pets Contest and originally provided by ilovemykids)
1. First select your username in the top right corner of any page.
2. After you choose that it'll take you to your user profile. In there choose "Show All Albums".
3. Next choose, "Add Album".
4. You will be taken to an album set up screen like the one below. Be advised that when you create this album it'll have to be made "PUBLIC" otherwise those NOT on your friends lists will not see your pic.
5. Once you have them uploaded. They'll be stored in your album. To post it, use the BB Code. Copy that long code and paste it into the post you'd like the image to be visible.
Be advised as well that the BB Code will look like the following when you post it:

thanks littlemoe0 for directing me here & FP for the instructions. Even if this does not work for me I did manage to change my wallpaper on my PC to the Tim Horton's coffee cup...so cool

I believe you need to create your ticker at the ticker factory site in order to get the html code
