tribute to the 11 Israeli team members who were killed at the 1972 Munich Games
President of the International Olympic Commission, Jacques Rogge, signs his name on a Truce Wall as he tours the Olympic Park in Stratford in east London on July 23.
President of the International Olympic Commission, Jacques Rogge paid tribute to the 11 Israeli team members who were killed at the 1972 Munich Games at a ceremony at the Athletes Village in London on Monday. A minute's silence was observed following Rogge's comments.
Eleven Israeli athletes and coaches were slain 40 years ago at the Munich games by an arm of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Sept. 5, 1972, a group of Palestinian terrorists stormed the Olympic village and took hostage 11 Israeli athletes and coaches. The standoff lasted 16 hours, ending in a botched rescue attempt. By the time it was over, all 11 hostages and a German police officer were dead.
-----------
Last week on the National, there was a documentary about how - not knowingly - two Canadians found themselves involved.
You can read about the story, and watch the 16 minute piece here.

Thanks for the links, Natalka. The Munich massacre happened before I was born and I had never heard of it. So I just finished watching a documentary. What an incredible show of selfishness! The Olympic officials decided to keep the games going as though nothing had happened and the television crews shot and described every move of the German police so that they were unable to attempt a rescue, because the show was more important than 11 lives!

I won't be watching any coverage on any american channel. You won't get to see any atheletes other than their own, and if Bob Costas is on I will shoot my tv.

Patty, I agree - they only focus on their own. However, they do amazing coverage and great backgrounders.
For me, my nemesis is Brian Williams - I cannot stand him! When CTV got the Olympics rights away from the CBC, I cheered so loudly, thinking that YAY the next Olympics would be sans Williams. Well, GAH, CTV hired him away from CBC. ARGH!
I can't stand his interview style, his delivery, his stupid comments....
Ok, got that all out...

I understand how there are times athletes take a pass on marching in the opening ceremonies, but I also think for many it's a once in a lifetime event, and I would think it would be so special to be there.
With the way things are spread out distance-wise for these games, apparently that's going to keep more athletes away -
