I was just flipping through the latest edition of Today's Parent magazine and came across this. I thought I would post it for anyone with autistic children or anyone who might be shopping for an autistic child this Christmas.
Toys r Us and Autism Speaks have joined together to form a microsite. If you click on the link and then click on ten toys that speak to autism, it gives you a list of 10 toys and why they are appropriate for development in autistic children

Good to know about the toys available for Autistic children.I would certainly go through the site mentioned again and again to get deeper insight on why such toys are used.Do you know about other kind of toys that are available for autistic children.Once again, thanks for throwing light on this topic.

It's great that they put up some suggestions!
I've worked with kids with autism since 95 and I would actually suggest staying away from the talking toys and books though. They tend to encourage ritualistic behaviours and speech. Some of the suggestions are really good though. Really simple turn-taking games like "Hot Potato" and "Kerplunk" help build social skills. Thomas the Tank is often a huge hit with boys. Puzzles and open-ended building toys are usually really well loved. Simple, structured pretend play kits like the cake-making set, puppets, felt boards or dress-up clothes are also really great ideas.
