Couponfreak, I've tried cantaloupe and watermelon and the secret is a load of manure and fertilizer. They are REALLY heavy feeders. The first time I tried cantaloupe I didn't feed them enough and they all ripened up the size of baseballs lol. It was pretty sad. At the same time I had some casaba melons grow out from the compost pile on top of the manure pile and they did amazing with no assistance! I think they are great fun plant for kids, so worth the headache. Cantaloupe has a shorter season than e.g., mini watermelons so you may like to take a look at them.
Tomatoes, you forgot the tomatoes! Last year we had a bumper crop but had blossom end rot becasue the plants were magnesium deficient from making up that many tomatoes. This year I will fix them up with 1/2 tsp epsom salts per liter of water, 'cause now I know. (Last year they just got Miracle Gro Tomato...will use that again but need the extra magnesium as well.)
