It's happened to most of us at one time or another, Hon...some people just want to make others feel miserable...just ignore comments like that... most of us KNOW what you meant and that your comments weren't meant to disparage anyone's race...:)

Canada is in North AMERICA so I think African American is fine.

Good for you! I would have not gotten him fired, but if it was me, I probably would have hurt him lol. You did the right thing. I am sorry you went through that, but at least other people will not have to go through what you went through. you did the right thing!

they are NOT Americans!!! what are you going to refer Asians in Canada?? Asian- American, Indian-American, Russian- American ........ just call them " black" it's not offensive, but you referring blacks in Canada as "Americans" is not politically correct or proper.

LOL!!! Not to belabour the point, but even blacks in the US are debating that: are they all African-American, or is that term only referring to descendants of African slaves? And are recent immigrants from Africa, then: Americans of African Descent?!

Reporting him was the right thing to do. You shouldn't feel bad about what decisions management took regarding his behavior. They have their own policies and procedures. If this wasn't his first complaint he likely got spoken too already and warned. Him getting fired is not your fault-It's his.

When they called me back to tell me that he'd been fired, they told me he had been sick. I guess they got a lot of complaints about him before. Both the hotel manager and I agreed that we felt bad about having him fired, on top of the illness he was fighting, but they had already given him plenty of chances and warnings before, and this was the last straw.

I could be wrong, but I think he was a jerk to begin with and the illness has nothing to do with him continuing to be a jerk. We've all met people like that.
