i ran the check a few weeks ago - all clean :)
McAfee is gone, Avast is all setup thanks for all the help but it is only good for 30 days. Do I have to keep installing every 30 days or did I do something wrong?
Just have to say thank you to all the computer whiz's on here or I would be totally lost at times.
hmm.. i don't recall whether or not that happened with the kids' laptop even though i only installed it this past december.. oy, my brain is mush.. lol.. any ideas Dave? i say just wait out the 30 days, i don't think you'll have to re-install, but let us know :)
Our computer wasn't working well...couldn't bring up IE, then Opera started refusing to do things, then we lost the cursor altogether, so hubby contacted some technician for IE (online tech?) and for $90 he took control of our computer and for about an hour he poodled around on it, but OMG, it's working like a dream now! It gets to sites faster than I can even think about going there, lol! I would have suggested your ideas to him but he was on his merry way before I knew it....but at least it's fixed and working perfectly!
Hm. I just read the receipt and it read:
You have been provided with the licensed AVG Internet Security for 1 year.
I hope that's a good thing............... :)
There is sometimes a "catch" to free antivirus software - this "nag" screen is one of them. The company is hoping you will get sick of the reminder and actually buy the full version! You don't need to do anything other than close the popup. If it really bugs you, try another free AV program. Cnet has the download links, along with the reviews for each. Check the comments on the reviews and make note of how many people have downloaded each program (gives an indication of its popularity).
I like Windows Security Essentials. It's free and you aren't nagged to buy something later...I've had no issues with it so far.
Just click on cookies on the two menus and cookies won't be deleted. Anything with no check mark next to it will not be deleted.

Yep!
I wanted to donate some of my unused processing power last week and stupidly chose Superdonate. They claimed to sell the processing power they get through donations, to scientific and medical research and use that money to support various charities (I chose the Nature Conservancy). Sounded great and I couldn't find anything negative about it online. Near gave Avast a heart attack-though. Trojan after Trojan blocked. I contacted Superdonate and asked wtf? No response so uninstalled it with extreme prejudice.
Donating processing power to Seti@Home for now (super cool screensaver) till I find something more worthy that is also trustworthy. Avast has no problem with it, and it's well established.
Got the green bar thanks.
Thank you, Dave.....he done good, then...:)
Another question for you computer wizards.
I installed Avast 3 months ago and my trial time is up tomorrow.
I dis installed yesterday and re installed yesterday as I thought this would give me 3 months trial again. Not working, now what?
Pretty darn sure but I guess I should double check, thanks.
One more question.
Avast is telling me my computer is at risk as according to them my subscription has expired but Avast is showing as being there and scans etc.
So, is it safe to say I do have it and hopefully won't have to go through this every 3 months?
I'm not sure, but is it possible you had a free trial of the paid version? It might be easiest to just uninstall the avast you have now and download the free version here http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
I think you only need to re-register (or whatever it's called) once a year. It's pretty easy I think they used to email a new code to put in but if I remember correctly, last time I did it I only had to click... I think :P
Once again, thanks for all the help as I think I finally have it straightened out. (hopefully)
downloaded the cleaner today, and things are running faster, thanks for all your help Dave, I really appreciate it.
A reminder

The FBI is snipping a cyber safety net on Monday that kept thousands of computer users online after their internet connections were hijacked by a piece of malware called DNSChanger, meaning those users could be disconnected from the web if they still haven't removed the virus by July 9.
The good news is if you're among the 7,000 Canadian PC or Mac users — or the hundreds of thousands more worldwide —still believed to have machines infected with the nasty DNSChanger virus, you can spare yourself the misery of being cut off from email, Twitter, Facebook and other online distractions by performing a simple test.
Google, Facebook and the FBI have all issued repeated alerts over the past year about the estimated 650,000 computers worldwide that fell victim to the DNSChanger trojan, but they and media outlets made one last public appeal this week warning of the looming July 9 deadline.
That's when the FBI will shut down the temporary DNS servers it set up to keep the virus-infected computers connected to the internet after it broke up a criminal operation that had rerouted victims' machines through a system of false DNS servers in order to direct users to fraudulent websites that allowed the perpetrators to earn money off advertising.
The FBI servers were meant to keep people connected to the web until the virus was removed and the connection through their usual internet service provider was resumed.
How to check for virus
Double-checking for the malware only takes a minute. Here's how to do it:
The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) has done much of the legwork for you by setting up an online screening system for your computer.
Visit the website www.dns-ok.ca/ and click on a link agreeing to run your computer through the DNSChanger malware checker. The page should refresh and show you either a green or red banner, with a message stating whether DNSChanger has been detected.
If it's green, you're in the clear. If the banner is red and a message confirms the virus has been detected, you can go to one of several websites set up to help inform the public about the virus and the related FBI operation for further instructions on how to remove it:

Easy peasy to check for it, click here:

Then click 'I agree` to the terms and conditions. Green means all is good, that`s it! :-)
still green
Computers are such fun! I did an update on my Anti Malware and lost my normal tabs on the top of my screen and for the life of me I have no idea how to fix it but on the bright side my videos are playing once again. LOL
What do you mean normal tabs? If you right click at the top of the screen you can choose to show menu bar and stuff, but personally I think it's nicer without all the extra stuff cause you get more screen space. Unless you mean you are missing a toolbar... or something completely different?
