A 27-year-old man has been charged with theft after allegedly stealing a baby grand piano from Toronto General Hospital in July.

Artem Stanislav Timofeyev is accused of wheeling the $27,000 Boston Steinway from its home in the hospital’s cardiac wing on July 14. Peel Regional Police recovered the piano 10 days later at a Mississauga music store. The store’s owner had purchased the instrument from a man fitting Mr. Timofeyev’s description, police said.
Security footage reportedly shows two men using a dolly to maneuver the instrument through the hospital to a waiting vehicle, where a third suspect stands by. Inquisitive staff members stopped the pair several times during the hours-long procedure, but believed the piano was being removed for maintenance.
The piano has since been returned to its home at Toronto General. It was donated to the hospital in 2006, and is used for weekly performances by visiting piano players. According to the hospital’s website, the piano will be featured in a September concert, its first performance since being returned.
Police have cleared the two other men seen in security images. The men worked for a moving company and had been hired for the job, unaware of their role in the alleged theft, said Const. Victor Kwong, spokesman for Toronto police.
Among the charges laid against Mr. Timofeyev are theft over $5,000, fraud and trafficking in stolen goods.
His name is featured on a modelling agency’s website and in 2011 he joined the ACTRA labour union for Canadian actors.
Police arrested Mr. Timofeyev on Aug. 29. He was due to appear in court at Old City Hall on Tuesday.
