You learn something everyday Natalka, I was watching BNN this morning and an annalist was talking about 'the' Ukraine and the correspondent interrupted her and told her it is Ukraine not the Ukraine right on the show, she was absolutely flabbergasted and stammered through the rest of the segment!!!

Oh, so interesting, thriftygranny - using the article 'the' is a touchy subject (and incorrect), because it harkens back to the time when Ukraine was under control of the Soviets when it was called the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Since its independence in 1991, the country is known as Ukraine. It's symbolic, yet very important to Ukrainians.
