That's really nice one and yes we are here now trying for pumpkins..Hope it goes well!!
Good luck, have fun!! :top:
Has anyone tried growing a small evergreen in a container? I think we're going to try that this fall.
I have two boxwood trees going right now, Lua. They've been in their original pots for the past two winters, I figured I'd finally give them a nicer home. I didn't have space for them anywhere in the garden so I just planted them in a couple of larger plastic pots. They should be good over winter. If they die now, I'm gonna be peeved! I also have miniature evergreens (think bonsai sized) in a pot, they survived this past winter... but then again, this past winter was non-existent.
Hello all,
newbie here and here is what is my contribution

Good to know. thanks! I have two large plastic containers on the patio and have yet to find the right annual combination to keep them looking nice all summer long... my DH and I were talking about them on the weekend and thought some little evergreens would look fantastic in the containers - plus they'd look nice in the winter too!! I never considered or even thought about putting evergreens in them before, but I look forward to give it a shot this year. Now I just need to find some sales! ;)
Well I did it! Got some boxwoods over the weekend and gave my planters a little makeover!
I pinned it here: http://pinterest.com/pin/138837600983769697/
And blogged about the upgrade here: http://mypinkthumb.com/2012/09/04/pa...anter-upgrade/
Way to go!!
apparently, for containers where you will leave the plant/bush/small tree in over winter, you should look for plants that are your hardiness zone, minus 2.
i live in zone 5, so i should look for things that are good to zone 3.
also, try and bring the plants into a shed with windows (if you have one) if it isn't totally exposed to the elements in an area with harsher winters, then it has a better chance of surviving/thriving.
of course i have no real world experience of this ;p i have been looking for evergreens to keep in containers so i found all this info online.
good luck lua :)
Hello fellow SC Gardeners!!
First of all, thanks for all the gardening posts (this thread, and others included) These posts will help me immensly this season!!
I need to start preparing for the planting season (as I'm the only one in my house who does anything... and I hate to be rushed at the end)
I'd like to get some ideas from people, what they have used in the past for their containers?? I would prefer FREE or CHEAP things... help me out here!!! my ideas so far;
seedlings - egg cartons (thanks Shwa Girl!)
old ice cream buckets
margarine containers
some old (food?) tins?
wheelbarrow (I don't have one, but might be able to find one cheap, Thanks GoJays!)
???
going to look at home later for some more items?
I've always had great success growing tomatoes, peas, and last year I managed to grow some carrots, but have never had much luck with lettuce and things like that (slugs mostly I think...) Here's my list I'm hoping for this year.
pumpkins and/or squash
carrots
peas
herbs
potatoes
tomatoes
....and maybe some beets, or beans, etc.
(also, I'm hoping garlic, but need some advice on those....? I have had ZERO success with garlic)
My parents once used an old wheelbarrow for a flower garden.. they could move it out of the way when they mowed the lawn :)
paper egg crates
each can be used for a few seedlings
(buy the eggs with various coupons:))
