hey-a
Well, I work at Fortinos and today we had a horrible problem with the debit and credit machines where none of the transactions were able to go through and those that did were VERY slow.
Now, I understand that I am a cashier, and that it is for some reason my responsibility to take the brunt of the problems and complaints for the stores, but this is just rediculous.
One lady was so upset with the debit not working (and the only alternative being the ATM machine we had in store - huge line-up by then) she actually dumped her bag upside down and threw (I don't know if on purpose or mistake, no apology either way) a bag of fries at me saying it was rediculous that it wasn't working and that I should have told her it wasn't working. Now, A: this problem just happened and didn't give us enough time to put up signs, and B: this wasn't even my till, I was just helping another cashier suspend an order with my ovverride.
I had more than half a mind to throw it right back at her I was so angry. But, all I said was that I was not the tech team for the interac, and that if I could personally make it easier for her I would as it would definately be easier for myself as well.
I also had many people who did use the ATM complain and say that Fortinos should be giving them the $2.00 fee back. Ummmm nope. Crap happens that is beyond our control or fault. Either deal with the $2.00 charge, or leave your groceries.
Seriously people, I understand that it is an inconvenience for you that interac isn't working, but for the love of God why do you automatically blame the cashiers like we are the root of all of the evil problems in the store? We are the last faces you see, but is it really worth potentially ruining a person's day because you are embarassed you didn't have another method of payment other than plastic?
And anyway, this wasn't just in the store I work at, it was everywhere so I really hope that lady went to the next store and had the exact same thing happen. Karma. This thread is currently associated with: Fortinos

yep it happened at all the grocery stores around here today too for some reason. A lot of my friends that work at grocery stores had similar complaints on facebook earlier LOL! All the machines went down I guess and everyone automatically assumes the cashier should fix it.

i saw my loblaws gas bar had the same problem. I only use my rewards card for gas so I saw the signs and decided I would try again tomorrow. I would never yell at someone for that.
I'm sorry this happened to you. People think everything is your problem since you are the person they see ( i am a server and believe me, everything is my issue, the prices, how long their food took to cook, the fact they can't make riduculous substitutions, etc.)
Just chin up, and think someone must have pooped in their cornflakes for them to behave that way.
btw, you need to watch "on the fly" on TLC.... people yelling at the airline because there is a snowstorm and they want all kinds of stuff for free. Yes, the airline put the snow there to incovenience you personally! I definitely relate to it, and it's good for a laugh!

I understand where u are coming from..glad you held it together. unless someone has been in your shoes..they don't understand and can be rude...
Don't let it ruin your day...ignorance is no excuse for them.
Whenever I leave a cashier...I always say..I hope you have a great day...evening...ect...It really does make a cashier feel appreciated...I know I did.

No Frills and Superstore in Chatham, ON had the same issue today.
I'm sorry you had to deal with rotten customers because of it. It was definitely frustrating, but it's silly to blame the cashier. It's not like you were purposefully making it not work just to hassle them.

The debit system was down at the RCSS I shopped at today too! What on earth is going on? I was so bummed that I could not get my PC points. I wonder if they will reimburse me when I take in my receipt on another day?

lol this reminds me of an incident i had several years ago. we put up signs when the debit went down and I even announced it out loud for everyone that was already in the store. one couple decided to ignore me and order anyway. they ordered their food anyway and when it was time to pay they said oh i didn't hear you say it was down. i said its fine this time and let them have the food free. (I was a supervisor there at the time so i had the ability to do that. plus it was just going to end up in the garbage anyway) they then demanded i give them a both a bottle of pop to drink. I said sorry no you were given the food free if you want drinks then you'll have to go get cash to pay for them.

Threw them at you? That's disgusting! What is wrong with people? That's assault!!!!!! They had an outage at Loblaws yesterday too. THey had signs up at the till and dude gave the poor cashier an earful. Even though there were signs everywhere he said he didn't see them. All he was buying was a $1 item and can he really say he didn't have $1 on him? Oh he had $20 he just didn't want to break the bill. He actually held up the line to complain to her. She eventually said "I've been telling customers that's what you get for relying on technology." That shut him up good and I made sure to be as sweet as pie to her.
In other news the douche behind me in line didn't say a word as the cashier accidentally scanned his items onto my receipt, hoping that I would pay for them. A$$. Gave him a scowl too and told the cashier "no, I would never buy a crappy toothbrush like this" haha!Apply every possible promo code to your cart, at every store that you visit (and get points for cash back on top of that?). Ohh the joys of customer service! I worked at the local Calendar Club during the Christmas holidays for two years now. And fricking heck people freak out when the ATM goes down! Our ATM machine is the cheap kind, or rather, the connection is the cheap kind. So it would constantly go out and we'd have to restart the ENTIRE console. Well, this takes about 15 minutes. And naturally people are in a big flipping hurry for their Calendars! "I have other places to be!" *grumble* Best one?
C: Would you hurry up?
Me: I'm going as fast as I can, the console is not a part of my body, I cannot control it very well.
C: Well you should, it's your console.
M: Not really, it's Calendar Club's console.
C: You work here, hurry it up!
M: Do you hurry up your stove or microwave? How about your cell phone or laptop? No, you wait until it's done. If you are in such a hurry, I can hold on to your calendar and wait for you to come back, otherwise you can go to another store.(Owners personally told me I was allowed to hold onto items if it went down and the customer was irate, and also to tell them to go to another store if they were getting annoyed).
She obviously left, but came back JUST as my shift was ending and paid with cash *sigh*
All in all, glad you kept your cool!!! People are just ignorant!

That's horrible! I can't believe the things people do when they don't get their way. Like torontogal12 said, that's assault! Had she done that in any other situation, security would probably escort her out and ban her from the store. But it seems in situations where machines or systems break down or let's say, a sale item was understock, etc. people someone think it's okay to act like total jerks! Ugh, sorry you had to have that happen to you.
