Sask. Pen riot - Prince Albert
James Bloomfield, a representative with the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers said the facility had been on a modified routine for several days prior to the riot due to issues in the penitentiary kitchens. “In this situation there [were] some issues with the kitchen workers, and the kitchen workers being inmates were refusing to go to work and were having some discussions over portion sizes,” Bloomfield said.
The medium-security inmates were released from their cells Wednesday afternoon to go to work and refused, Bloomfield said, which resulted in negotiators being called in.
“They realized they were not going to be fruitful in their discussions,” Bloomfield said. “There was no communication from the inmate side so we then deployed the emergency response team to control the area.”
According to Bloomfield, the prisoners barricaded themselves in as best they could and set about destroying everything within reach as the emergency response team prepared to retake the unit. Bloomfield said inmates smashed every light bulb and window, pulled beds from walls, set fires and caused flooding throughout the unit.
As violence and destruction reigned within the unit, Bloomfield said the emergency response team stormed the barricades.
“They deployed a lot of gas, a lot of pepper spray in various forms,” he said. “It was found to be not as effective as we needed it to be, as the windows were all smashed out.”
With the gas not working, the emergency response team used their firearms, injuring six inmates with shotgun pellets. Bloomfield said officers then found three inmates suffering from stab wounds, one of whom died in hospital. The deceased inmate was later identified by Correctional Service Canada as Jason Leonard Bird, 43.

Alberta Parks has issued a warning about moose approaching cars to lick off road salt in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.
Apparently moose have been spotted in a couple of parking lots licking off that sweet, sweet salt.
Parkgoers are advised to use their horn or car alarm to scare off any moose licking their cars. The warning also says to “not attempt to push moose away from your vehicle while on foot.”

So I saw the NZ corned mutton at Freshco this week...it was $10.99!
Zehrs had a much more affordable 115g can of snails for $2.79, appropiately M'Lord brand. As in OML/OMG.
However, in early spring you can see people picking snails to eat in the fields around here. I though they were free?

Russian ambassador shot in Turkey
A Turkish policeman has shot dead Russia's ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, apparently in protest at Russia's involvement in Aleppo.
The killer has been identified as Mevlut Mert Aydintas, 22, a member of the Ankara riot police. It was not clear if he had links to any group.
The incident happened a day after protests in Turkey over Russian support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Turkey's president said the attack was aimed at hurting ties with Russia.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone and, in a video message, said that they both agreed it was an act of "provocation".
He said that those who wanted to harm relations between the two countries "would not achieve it".
In televised remarks, Mr Putin said the act was "undoubtedly a provocation aimed at disrupting the normalisation" of bilateral ties and the "peace process in Syria".
A group of Russian investigators will arrive in Turkey to look into the case, Mr Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

9 people killed as lorry plows into Berlin street market
An articulated lorry has ploughed into a busy Christmas market in the heart of Berlin, killing nine people and injuring many more, police say.
Berlin State Interior Minister Andreas Geisel said it was still unclear if it had been an attack or an accident.
A suspicious person was arrested nearby, policy say, while what they describe as a passenger was found dead.
The market is at Breitscheidplatz, close to the Kurfuerstendamm, the main shopping street in the city's west.
Chancellor Angela Merkel has been in contact with the interior minister and the mayor of Berlin, her spokesman, Steffen Seibert, tweeted.
"We are in mourning for the dead and hope that the many injured can get help," he added.
German President Joachim Gauck said in a statement that it was an "awful evening for Berlin and for our country".

Swiss reports said the three wounded were all adults who had been found in Eisgasse, a small street where an Islamic centre is based.
There was no indication who carried out the shooting but local media said the attacker had fled the scene.

Site calls for targeting Jews in American town
Many people in the small town of Whitefish, Montana were unhappy to learn a leader of a white supremacist group had listed his mother’s home in the town as his primary office. Now, another white supremacist is calling for people to “pressure” and “take action” against Jewish people in Whitefish.
It started when Richard Spencer, the president of the National Policy Institute, labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group, hosted a white supremacist conference near the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. in late November. During that conference, he said, “Hail, Trump! Hail, victory!” while making the Nazi salute. People soon found the address listed for Spencer’s business was in Whitefish, though it was actually a building owned by his mother, Sherry Spencer, who claims her son never worked out of it.
Members of Love Lives Here, a human rights group in Montana, started threatening to boycott businesses located within the building owned by Sherry Spencer. Tanya Gersh, a local realtor connected to Love Lives Here, particularly pressured her to sell the property, according to a post by Spencer in Medium that published emails from Gersh. Sherry Spencer announced on Saturday that she does plan to sell her building, according to the Daily Inter Lake.
Sherry Spencer also claimed many people threatened her via email, though no emails she posts reference threats specifically. One does ask, “do you really think people will want to rent from a racist?” Sherry Spencer has said she does not agree with her son’s views.
The racist website Daily Stormer then decided to get back at certain people in Whitefish on Sherry Spencer’s behalf, posting the phone numbers, home addresses and emails of several Jewish people in the area on Friday. The author of the Daily Stormer article, Andrew Anglin, calls Jews “a vicious, evil race of hate-filled psychopaths” and puts yellow stars on the pictures of Jewish people, similar to what Jews were forced to wear in Germany during the Holocaust.
Anglin even posts the Twitter page and a picture of Gersh’s son, who appears to be a child and Anglin calls “creepy” and a derogatory term for homosexual people.
Anglin says not to violently threaten the people he lists, but to “take action” and tell them they are “sickened by their Jew agenda.”
“This is very important. Calling these people up and/or sending them a quick message is very easy,” Anglin writes. “It is very important that we make them feel the kind of pressure they are making us feel. There hasn’t ever been a more important campaign than this.”
In a follow up post addressing media coverage, Anglin denies that he posted home addresses of Jewish people, though he did. He also says he will be publishing an extended list.

^ Since the providers will have to pay into a fund, they will be probably charging current customers a certain amount per month to subsidize it.
