I'm hoping someone here can help me. We plan on visiting the Netherlands and will have use of a nephew's vehicle. Does anyone know if we would have to purchase additional insurance to cover ourselves or is this included with his car insurance. We've heard of people swapping homes/cars for vacations and I wonder how auto insurance is affected....

Your car insurance won't cover you outside of North America. I would suggest that your nephew looks into his auto insurance coverage.

You will also need that international driving permit. Details on the CAA site:

It would be worthwhile to ask your insurance broker about riders for international driving. It is likely there is a service available if you are willing to pay the fee for it, like travel insurance.

Thanks all for your replies. In the meantime we have returned from our trip to the Netherlands. We were able to borrow a nephew's car and he made sure it had the proper insurance.

I was too. I've been following the steps in the book "Your Money or Your Life", and translating purchases into what it costs in life energy and asking the question if I received fulfillment in exchange for that life energy has curbed my spending quite a bit.

That would be the best thing to do.
