I refuse to let my children talk to strangers in stores and such.
But we'll talk to the cashier or waitress. I explain that it's good to be polite to people we are buying things from, but we don't talk to stangers behond politness.
In the Dr.'s office we've sat and talked to the old people. but again... not going behond polite.
I tell them not to talk to strangers all the time. I won't let them just say "hello" to random people. And I keep a close watch on them, without ever letting go of hands.

We had an episode around here last year where there was an attempted abduction and since then I have been leary of letting my girls go play by themselves. They know not to talk to strangers and it is difficult when someone compliments them on something and they do not answer back, I usually say to the person that they have been told not to talk to strangers. Then my oldest will say "then why did you talk to them?" It gets very complicated at times.

I know!
Very complicated issue.
Our little City is having an issue right now. A man is making attempts on young girls every day for the last week. He has yet to be caught. The girls are between 12 and 19 so far.
Pretty scary! I hope they catch him soon... a week is far to long!

I have twins that are 7 and they are so friendly that they talk to everybody, I explained to them that it is ok to talk to strangers as long as I am standing right there with them and if they meet them again by chance and I am not there just to walk away!

I let baby J. have polite conversation with people around when I'm there... but I don't let them touch him or anything like that. I especially hate it when strangers ask his name. Why do they do that?
What I like is that he's pretty distant with adults. He won't start up a conversation with them and he holds on to my hand if someone strange is talking to him (even if it is a friend of mine).

my son is just shy and clams up when strangers talk to him. Which is good I guess, I don't want him talking to just anybody, but at the same time I don't want him to fear everyone. Not everyone is bad, and he needs to know that. Unfortunately, we live in a society which instills fear of people in our kids, I guess I still believe that there are more good people out there than there is bad... I hope I never have to change my opinion
