Hey-a
I had a scheduled removal of a "mystery lump" which made itself a permanent resident of my big left toe today at 1:15pm
Upon observation by the same foot specialist who sent me to the hospital for surgery, he stated that I had to go for x-rays because he did not know what was in there. Ok, but why the hell didn't you ask for an x-ray over a month ago when you put me in the hospital for surgery?
Anywho....went to the x-ray area, waited only a little bit and then got my x-ray done. Went back to the outpatient waiting area to wait for the doctor again.....
He came in and said that he could not do the surgery because I have a huge bone spur growing upwards in my toe, it being the cause of the mysteriously enlarging lump. He also said the I had to be referred to an orthopedic surgeon and that could take 3 months or more......WTF?
This is rather painful, rubbing on the inside of any close-toed shoes when I walk. Where I work there are major rules of what footwear I make use of (steel-toed boots for one job, and plain black sneakers for the other - both closed-toed)
To make this worse, I had already booked off a week after today from both of my jobs (I have a split week between the two) and cannot fix this for one of them. The foot specialist had told me to book off time, so I did.
I am having a hard time believing that a trained family physician cannot read an x-ray of a toe to see if there are "extra bones" there, him being the first person that I was in conact with. I also have a hard time understanding why a foot specialist cannot ask me to go and get x-rays and instead deny my surgery last minute?
I am thoroughly dissapointed with the training of these individuals, and even more so that I have to continue to rub this thing raw everyday inside my shoes.....This thread is currently associated with: N/A

I think we all at SC would appreciate it if you booked your foot surgery during a time when there are no fpc's to be found in the recycling plant !!!
On a more serious note. I feel for your frustration. Medical treatment is free in this country and I very much appreciate that it is but it doesn't take away from the inconvenience it can cause. Good luck with the toe. Let me know if you need Motrin Liquid Gel coupons or wine to take away some of the pain.

Oh, that's too bad - but it's good that what's wrong will be looked after in time anyway.
Wear some nice wide soft shoes - not the time to worry about fashion!
Good luck!

We PAY for medical coverage here in BC. This coverage pays for your doctor visits, ER, lab, X-rays etc...
The rate depends on your income. An average working person could pay just over $62 a month while lower income is less. Natives get medical free. The company my husband works for pays for our medical and our third party medical and that pays for medications and some dental.
Wait lists are awful for orthopedic care. Ortho waits are just over 2 years here in northern BC. We could pay the $800-$1000 flight to Vancouver if we want to be seen sooner.
I was gunna say that hope this didn't sound rant-y but it is the rant section LOL. I work as a medical office assistant out here so this peaked my interest.
Hang in the AmandaPantz cuz it could be worse....u could live here and wait...

I had this happen with a badly ingrown toenail about 9 years ago; I had booked an appointment to have the nail removed and went in with the expectation that I was going home without my toenail. The doc who was supposed to cut the nail out looked at it and said I had to come back in FOUR WEEKS to get it done, and wanted me taking antibiotics the entire time in between (not good for my body, especially for that long), and ibuprofen even though I am very, very allergic to that drug!! It was not one of my finer moments; I raised my voice and got very upset (it was very uncomfortable). All the doc did in response was reduce the duration of antibiotic use; I still had to wait the month for the removal (very hard when you walk everywhere!) and like you, had a job where steel-toed boots were a must!
I really feel for you. I have my fingers crossed that you can get a cancellation appointment and make it into the specialist sooner rather than later. I would call the specialist's office and ask to get put on the cancellation list; it's a bit of a pain in the butt (short notice), but very, very worthwhile IMHO.
