I love the Island Lakes Garage sale, and have gone for years. I'm getting to the point now that we don't need much!

If you go, be sure to park legally... some years, there have been parking commissionaires and tow trucks out to ticket people and tow their cars away! Definitely makes getting a deal expensive! I normally park in a safe place and pull my folding shopping cart around for a few hours. Get there early to find parking. A lot of people open up a bit early, so you want to be there to get the good stuff! I usually have made most of my finds in the first hour.

After doing so much garage saling over the years, I've learned to "profile" garage sales. Quite often, going to the newest part of an area gets you the best selection of baby/kid stuff, if that's what you're looking for. Look at the people and the condition of their home/yard to give you a good idea of how things have been taken care of.... If the people are standing outside smoking during their garage sale, it's a good indication that you shouldn't buy... even if they say they normally just smoke outside, you won't be able to tell if the items are smoky if they're smoking nearby. If, from the curb, you see ancient luggage and 70's desk chairs and old exercise equipment, chances are that most of the other stuff will be the same.

And for anyone having a garage sale, the most important thing is to price everything. If I end up at a garage sale without prices, I have to be very interested in something to ask the price, and I tend to assume that it will be high. Sellers often seem to expect that the person is immediately going to buy the item if the buyer asks what the price is.

If you're setting up signs, make your address the biggest thing on the sign -- much bigger than the word "Garage Sale". Use arrows if you can.

*good point - there have been issues of ambulances/firetrucks not being able to get to emergencies during this crazy garage sale so there are ALWAYS parking commisionaires as some folks park any which way.* Please park safely
