Has anyone tried this service yet?

I'm leaning towards the Telus $7/month unlimited one-number inbound/outbound, and then adding on the Magic Number for $8.95 (month to month). Would be nice to hear how the sound quality is, and any stories people have.

My own story on how to get an unlimited airtime package for my cell phone for just $14.70 a month

    1) I went to Future shop to get my prepaid phone–Telus LG Keybo.

This phone cost me CAD$79.99 but includes a $20 calling credit. I don’t want to pay any activating fee to TELUS outlets, so I brought the phone back home and activated it online.

2). I registered a TELUS account and got my cell phone activated on-line at TELUS website www.telusmobility.com (http://www.telusmobility.com/en/BC/y...nt/index.shtml)

3)After logging in to my account, I selected the e.Care Tab > under features column > clicked add/change features. Then I added one number unlimited.
I checked the "auto renew upon expiration"

4). From now on TELUS will deduct $7.75 per 30 days from my prepaid account. (The One Number Unlimited for $7 and the 911 service for $0.75) and I could talk to ONE number for unlimited minutes without extra charge.

    5) Then I signed up for Magic Number Service at www.magicnumber.ca and got my personal ”Magic Number” for $6.95.

6). I Logged in to my TELUS account and went to e-care again. I registered my “Magic Number” as my ONE free number with TELUS

Now I have unlimited incoming and outgoing cell phone service for only $14.7 per month (7.75+6.95). I dial the magic number, then my friends number to dial out. Anyone who dials my magic number gets to my cell. It's the only number my cell phone needs. So I never pay the 25c a minute charge as I only call the one unlimited number and telus just takes $7.75 a month off the credit I store in my prepaid account.

BTW. Magic Number requires me to do a two stages dialing in order to make free outgoing calls. I still like to dial out directly through my contact list or speed dial.

After playing with my LG Keybo phone, I managed to set speed dial numbers for all my contacts.

I stored the the phone number for each contact as follows:

    John Doe
    9051234567T9057654321#

    Jane Doe
    9051234567T9059876543#

That is: 9051234567(my magic number) “T” (wait key)9057654321(my friend's number) then # to dial out from my magic number

T -> is the Wait function. Most phones have this function. It can be found in the options menu when creating a new contact on LG and Samsung phones. If you don’t have Wait function, I have heard people people say they can use several P (pause) instead of T. Anyway, you need to try it by yourself.

Are there any catches to this? Yes, there are one or two. First, you don't get caller ID as everyone calls through your magic number. Second, texting can't go through your magic number so you'd need to get the $3 texting package in addition to the $7.75 one number unlimited from Telus if you do much texting, and your friends would have to keep two numbers in their contact list; your cell phone number for texting and your magic number for voice.

Even so, it's worth it as it is half the price of any comparable package and if you have to pay for cell phones for a whole family, this saves hundreds of dollars a month.

    Cheers.<o:p></o:p>

Wildcat007, thanks for the info, I also successfully program the call from contract on 2 of my phones so far.

It is really simple on Samsung phone. I think it is this model:
    http://www.mobileincanada.com/images...-m22-front.jpg

and also an LG similar to this one
    http://images.intomobile.com/wp-cont...low-end-lg.gif

(I think the T feature is standard).

    IMPORTANT

If you use P instead of T on the Samsung (and maybe LG), the phone doesn't dial passed the pause until you press the "send " button. Also, if I forget to enter the # at the end of the speed dial setting, I still get through, but it takes a little longer.

    wildcat007, you rock!

How has the sound quality been with Magic Number?

Another nice little trick might be to change the voicemail message included with Telus Pay 'n Talk to say something like "The number you have called has changed. The new number is ______________" and include the Magic Number. Then when the person calls (obviously someone who has not called before), you'd be able to see who it is and ask them to redial the Magic Number.

In my limited experience with Magic Number’s call quality, it’s really depending on where you are and where you call to. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
I have no complained for 95% of the time, although I did have a couple of times encounter the not so-excellent receptions while using Magic numbers for local calls. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
The only really bad experience I had is when I call to my sister to L.A last month. I almost can’t hear what she said; I have to hanged up and place another call in order to continue our conversation. I thought this might also happened to any other company especially when you only pay 2.5 cents for an international call. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
My daughter also have a Magic number, I have notice that there might be a slight degredation in the quality for calling from Magic Number to another Magic number, although I don’t know why.<o:p></o:p>

Magic Number has extended their offer to waive the $25 activation fee on the month-to-month (no contract) plan.

    Month-to-month costs $8.95
    * Limited time offer: Waive $25 activation fee by sign up before Dec. 2009

Thank you wildcat007 for explaining the "T" part. I didn't know what that meant. My phone says "2-second pause" and "hard pause" in the menu options when entering numbers. I played with both and I love the "T."

Wow, thanks for the info Wildcat007.
I gave up my cell phone as it was too expensive for the few times I was using it and really couldn't find a plan or pay-as-you go option back then that was worth it; I had it primarily for emergency use.
This sounds like a great option!! I'll have to look into it.

Wildcat, the cost you posted is that including taxes?

$14.7 is pre-tax rate, the only concern is that whether this company still exists as all its contact number and websites are dead now. btw, if you order telus cell phone online from telus website, you can get $50 calling credit back which is much better than futureshop $20 back deal.

I contacted Telus to see if I could weasel the cost down for changing from a contract upon expiration to prepaid. This would mean I would not have to buy the $50 PrePaid startup, which has a shorter expiration than the $100 (365 day) prepaid card. Here is what they told me:

"Thank you for your e-mail. We are pleased to assist you with your inquiry concerning how to migrate from PCS Post Paid to Prepaid service.

TELUS Prepaid service is available to clients whose contracts have expired or who have service on a month-to-month basis. If you would like to migrate to a Prepaid account, your current TELUS wireless handset may be used.

The $50.00 Prepaid Starter Kit is waived for existing clients who have been a TELUS wireless client for six months or longer, are migrating an active account, and who have paid all outstanding balances older than 30 days.

To migrate to our Prepaid service, please contact our Client Care Team at the number below. Please advise the representative that you wish to migrate to our Prepaid service. The representative will then help you set up a new Prepaid account. The procedure will involve charging your closing monthly post-paid account $10.00 prior to canceling, then applying the $10.00 as a credit on your new Prepaid account. This will allow you to use your new service immediately. Please note that we are unable to transfer any remaining credit balance from your closed account to your newly-activated Prepaid account.

Thank you for your patience in this matter. We appreciate your continued support of TELUS' service and products.

    Sincerely,

    Cyndi
