And not just any skank...but a green-thumbed queen skank . Last weekend, I mentioned to Patty Smyth that I was planting a row of cedar. She had offered to come over to give me some gardening and design advice. She first showed up Sunday morning while I was still stumbling around wiping the sleep from my eyes . What I thought was only going to be a morning of walking through the yard and maybe a trip to a gardening center or two, turned out to be a three-day gardening marathon. I never imagined I would learn so much and that we would get so much done. Patty puts the energizer bunny to shame!
This is how it first all started. For years I had been meaning to plant a row of cedar to cover the length of fencing on one side of the house. I finally got my butt in gear and made it happen last Saturday.
14 Thuya Smaragd. They grow to 5m high and 1m wide and pretty much keep their shape without looking like a regular cedar hedge. I can't wait for them to fill in.This thread is currently associated with: N/ALast edited by snuffaluffagus; Tue, Sep 25th, 2012 at 08:26 PM.

Patty decided right away that a garden was needed on either side of the front entrance. Little did I know that she was going to do it all by herself. I'm not even sure she knew at first but then I took the whip came out and she got started, lol.
I had a lonely rose bush on one side. Patty dug up a trench to install the border, turned over dirt, and shoveled in 2 yards of soil. She transplanted some lovely dark green hostas that I had hidden in another corner garden. We picked up some 'Summer Music' hostas which she planted around the rose bush. Rudbeckia Herbstone was planted by the wall. She also put in a Thuya Smaragd on either side next to the house.Last edited by snuffaluffagus; Tue, Sep 25th, 2012 at 08:39 PM.

On the other side, Patty gave my Dogwood a good pruning and removed a Burning Bush because it was hidden by the faster growing Dogwood. She replaced it with another Thuya and put in some Hostas that she brought from home (Patty, I forget what kind they are?). Also planted were some Echinacea (again I forget what kind ).

Ack, the photos are appearing backwards .
And no, I didn't just stand around watching Patty work, lol. For another soon-to-be garden in the center of the yard, Patty helped me choose a dwarf Alberta Spruce (Rainbow's End) to replace a different kind I already had growing (she was just transplanted to another side of the yard), 2x Miscanthus Nippon grass, a Viburnum Trilobum, a Dogwood (different variety from what I have up near the house), and a Lindon Greenspire tree. The Burning Bush that she dug up was also transplanted here.
I'll be digging this area up within the next couple of days and maybe planting a few more small trees. Patty says that eventually, it will all be a garden (hope that means she intends on spending all of next Spring/Summer here, lol).Last edited by snuffaluffagus; Tue, Sep 25th, 2012 at 09:02 PM.

I forgot to mention, not only did she also rake a bunch of gravel, she also pruned a good 60' length of trees.
Patty, I don't know what I did to deserve all your help but, I owe you big time and I love you dearly for your friendship and generous spirit . A million thanks to my skanky pal.~RRLF $0.75 Organic Meadow, $1 Almond Fresh~
