which potty to get

which one do you recommend? seat goes on toilet or separate potty...
there are so many to choose from... thanks for all the inputs.

Someone else will have to expand on the benefits of each type, as I honestly don't remember. We used the type that goes right onto the toilet with both of our boys. We didn't have room in our bathroom for an actual potty, and I also wanted my kids to learn right from the start of potty training that they needed to go to the bathroom from now on. But if your child is scared of the toilet, this might not be the way to go. If you do decide to go with a seat on the toilet, I highly recommend one that Wal-Mart sells (or used to). It folds up, which makes it great for bringing everywhere with you, but it's also quite comfortable for the little ones to sit on (very important I find).

I have 3 pottys: 1 travel seat(handy for on the go), a seat which is placed on your toilet, and a sit on type potty that has a flushing sound(which also converts to a stool). I don't have a lot of room in my washroom so orginally I had the potty you place on your own toilet. Now some of them come with the "Potty Hook" which you place under the toilet lid(where the the pump and stuff is). Then you don't have to worry about the potty collecting germs on the floor. I bought this hook separately and plan to use it for DS #2 who I will be training soon.

The sit on potty was a bit more expensive but I had justified the stool aspect. Although it's not always practical(ie/ my DS #1 needs the stool to wash his hands, then DS #2 doesnt have his potty and has to use the one in the bathroom). I think it is good for keeping childrens attention with the flushing sound and they find it fun. Also great when say and adult is in the washroom and you can kep the potty outside the washroom to prevent accidents!

I used both a potty that you sat on the floor and one that goes on the toilet. All three of my kids choose to use the one that goes in the toilet. I personally liked that one also because it didn't mean having to clean out the potty chair every time. The one that goes on the toilet is so much easier to clean. Plus my kids loved going like a big kid.

I actually liked the potty seat from Dollarama. I bought a potty and two other potty seats before I bought the Dollarama one, and my son didn't like them... most seats didn't seem to sit well on our toilet, so they weren't very secure, and this one seemed pretty solid and unlikely to fall off. It's padded and was $2. Of course, it did scratch the seat a little from DS wiggling around on it, but that could probably be prevented if you glue some cork over the scratchy hanger part underneath... but getting the boy to actually sit on the toilet because he wasn't in danger of falling off was worth the cost of replacing the seat. I bought two more of the Dollarama seats to use with DS 2 in case they stop selling them... we'll just save the scratched toilet seat to put on the toilet when he starts potty training and needs a seat.

it will depend on your child and their comfort level, my son started with potty, he would sit on it and watch tv and really had no clue what he was sitting on it for, until the day his cousin who is 1 yr older went pee on the toilet and he got it.. Then he had seat on toilet. My daughter has several seats for the toilet, one in every bathroom, she liked them based on the character on the seat.. Often I think to start you have both options available, and make it very positive thing, and if they have no interest dont push it.. Big thing to help get them trained, use underwear not pull ups or diapers.. Good luck! My

I have one that goes on the toilet and one that goes on the floor. I like both for different reason, the one on the toilet folds up and is portable, and it means I dont have to dump anything (just flush!) the one on the floor she can access herself which is super important for independance.

I preferred the one on the floor (except for emptying it, lol), it's great because it converts into a stepstool. I also bought a cheap ikea one which was good for bringing along when we went out. We also have the Dora seat for the toilet but it was harder to get onto, and a pain to have to move out of our way all the time. Good for when they are a bit older though.

a potty that goes on the floor is a great perk becuase it`s low.. easy for them to get on and off it`s "my size" for them and you can put it in places that are in sight (i found out of sight out of mind) we went for the boon potty because it doubled as a foot stool, it had a lid that shut and she was able to keep books in the side (it let me keep the potty in highly tracked areas for her to remember to use it) i know alot of people who are huge fans of the bjorn potty because of the design its highly durable and super easy to clean (just a single piece of molded plastic) i`ve been told the less parts the better when it comes to the potty just for ease of cleaning

i`ve also discovered if you have a long narrow toilet seat (my mom does..) the on top seats don`t fit well my poor babe fell in atleast once because the seat shifted under her
