My current GPS, a Tomtom has died after 5 years of heavy (up to 5 times a week use) has died, it will not connect to a satelight signal, sometimes it will speak directions, sometimes it will not etc. It is a model from about 8 years ago. Are there any models that you would recommend?
Ideally something I can buy online or in a store (walmart, futureshop, staples, canadian tire or the source are the only electronics stores here). I would like a unit under $150, it does not need to have a large display screen, I just want something reliable like my old tomtom. I use it almost daily.Try out the maven box by julep And code FREEFB, and get your box for one cent:

I have a Magellan and I really like it. The one I had previously didn't tell me what side the street was on, and this one makes a little noise when my turn comes up.

I use Google Maps with Navigation on my Samsung Galaxy smartphone. There are also apps you can download....and torrents to make them free.

Garmins are great and have several in your price range. Just make sure it has lane assist talks. Most have lifetime maps. My personal like is a 4.3 inch one , I find the 5-7 inch ones too big. I have their 2455LM.

I've owned a Garmin Nuvi 265 for the last three years. It still good, but there's very little memory left on it, and it's doubtful that the next map update will be successful unless I buy extra memory. I've decided that the next gps I buy will be a Tomtom with free lifetime map updates as well as lane assist.

I know nothing about in GPS, but in theory couldn't you delete the old ones?
We've been hiking almost weekly on a trail near our house that I don't have a map of. I've been experimenting a bit with my phone (always had the 'location' bit disabled), interesting to see where we are.

I am keeping an eye on the sales. In the meantime my device has come back to life and has been working, although intermittently. I wonder if there has been a few problems with the sate-lights lately.
