Hill’s Pet Nutrition Canada, makers of Science Diet® pet food, recognizes Slave Lake rescue efforts with $10,000 donation

This year, Hill’s Pet Nutrition Canada, Inc., makers of Science Diet® pet food, committed to donating $1 to Canadian animal shelters, for every fan that ‘liked’ their page. We want to thank all the members of our Facebook community for their overwhelming support of this initiative.

As a result, Cherie Reynolds from Hill’s was onsite at the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS), to present staff with a cheque for $10,000. EHS, who responded to the Slave Lake disaster without hesitation, will be putting this donation towards their disaster relief fund to ensure they can continue to help pets in need.
The EHS, founded in 1903, reacted quickly when wildfires struck Slave Lake, Alberta earlier this year. The fires forced nearly all of the 7,000 Slave Lake residents to evacuate the town – with little warning in many cases. Via their mobile rescue, EHS staff were able to rescue almost 300 pets from the Slave Lake area. Volunteers worked tirelessly around the clock to help care for the animals once transferred to the shelter in Edmonton.

“We are so grateful that Hill’s recognizes the efforts of EHS, staff and volunteers,” says Stephanie McDonald, CEO of the Edmonton Human Society. “Disasters like Slave Lake come unexpectedly and donations like the one from Hill’s and their Facebook community make it possible for us to prepare to react to future emergencies quickly.”
Residents of Slave Lake were able to request rescue of their pets via the Slave Lake Evacuated Animals Facebook page. Pet parents were asked to share the detailed information about their animal and home location to assist in the effort. Staff and volunteers of the EHS made daily trips from Slave Lake to Athabasca and Edmonton, to deliver pets to their owners.
“There are so many deserving animal shelters across Canada,” explains Frances Cheslo RVT, Communications Supervisor at Hill’s. “However in light of the incredible tragedy that families and pets of Slave Lake have faced this year, and all the incredible effort that EHS staff and volunteers devoted to this disaster, we felt that the choice was clear and our community would wholeheartedly support our decision.”

With the funds donated by the Hill’s community, EHS will be able to purchase a much-needed trailer for their mobile rescue unit. This trailer will carry the necessary equipment to rescue and response events, as well as disasters and increase the space available for rescued pets.
