Thread: Dislikes SmartCanucks Websites Spying / adds / windows
-

I just switched to Windows 7 and noticed that SmartCanucks advertisements are from recent visits i have done on the web.. Ie: Hotel sites i have visited, online stores.. Its quite disgusting that the retailer and SC participate in this type of advertising. Yes you have to make money but use generic adds.. DONT Take Private Information from my computer.. What else are you taking or selling about us?
I think i am going back to Linux, I rather keep my information safe. This thread is currently associated with: Microsoft

Gogo Noscript.
It's not just SC that uses cookies this way, almost all websites that have adverts do. Facebook is a big one that does.

I got rid of the ads awhile ago. The last straw for me was when they started making things in the ad move across my screen. I'm a lot happier and there's no loss for the companies involved, because I would never do business with someone who is trying to annoy me anyway.
But if you want to have some fun with the ads, you can change and control what they show you with your searches.

It's looking at the 'cookies' that are stored in your browser to get that information.

I've been noticing the ads getting much more specific lately.

It's in SC's Privacy Policy (link at the bottom of the page). SC does not hide that this practice takes place. It's clearly stated.
Some of these advertisers may use technology such as cookies and web beacons when they advertise on our site, which will also send these advertisers (such as Google through the Google AdSense program) information including your IP address, your ISP , the browser you used to visit our site, and in some cases, whether you have Flash installed. Google, as a third party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on your site. Google's use of the DART cookie enables it to serve ads to your users based on their visit to your sites and other sites on the Internet. Users may opt out of the use of the DART cookie by visiting the Google ad and content network privacy policy.......SEARCH USING SWAGBUCKS!.....

This is not an SC feature (nor a browser one), it is a Google Ads feature - any website that uses google ads will do this. You can opt out by clicking the little blue arrow on a google ad and ask them not to track you - but it has to be done at an individual level. These ads have been on the site for ages, I don't think its related to any changes to you using Windows 7
http://www.google.com/ads/preferences?hl=en <- you can also change preferences for adverts there
Remember that when you block ads, you reduce the income for that website making it hard for it to remain free for you

Vb has the option to sell ad free memberships. Might be something to consider. I think $35 a year is the average rate.

The advertising revenue is what pays for the servers SC runs on, Boo has said many times he does not want to turn SC into a paid site (partial or full)

I'm using Google Ads which is a very standard ads network and the one used by most websites across the Internet. That being said you are welcome to use Ad Blocker to block the ads if you don't want to see them
I'd rather not sell membership because I prefer that SC remain 100% free.
