We use, and completely stand by Linksys for our router; the big thing for us is the fact that we are able to run our own firmware (Tomato) which we would highly recommend to anyone that is not a novice user.

What you need to remember though is that a lot of devices cannot use 802.11n, typically they will be b/g such as a PS3 if you have one, so don't go spending mega $$ just to get 802.11n when you can easily get a Linksys router that is b/g/n and run it mixed so all your devices can use the wireless at home.

What level of tech skills do you have? What's your budget?

The truth is most routers targeted for home use suck big time. We use pfSense on a 1U linux box. You could build one from recycled parts pretty cheaply. You would probably only need to get the network cards.

windows has built in firewall. just use that. go under control panel and turn on.

Actually, it's on by default -- unless someone's been monkeying with your setup, it should already be on.

My family has TP-Link . Works not bad but our internet regularly slows down, and rebooting the router sometimes helps with that. On the other hand, we have really awful internet provided to our house, so it's certainly not entirely the router's fault. We have to use a signal booster to have good Internet connection.
