When do you turn on the heat?

I am curious as the weather is getting colder. When do you turn on the heat in your living space?

I am currently in Fredericton, in a small apartment (2 floors above me, five floors below, apartments on the left and right). I pay for heat, so I try to wait the longest I can without turning on the heat. The temperature has been below freezing the last couple nights, including light snow one morning. It's been pretty chilly in the apartment. I've been getting a lot of use out of a snuggie, polar fleece pj's and extra blankets on the bed.

Last year I was in a large, drafty older home in Northern NB, so I had the furnace turned on by mid October. Before that I was in a small one bedroom apartment in Nova Scotia, it wasn't until late January/early February when I gave in and turned on the heat.

I don't go on vacations or trips during the winter, so no worries about it getting so cold the pipes would freeze. Currently I think the apartment is around 10-15 degree's.

We turn the heat on as soon as it starts getting chilly but we have small kids and heat is included in our rent.

Our thermostat is set to 21 or 21.5 depending on wind direction once the temp starts to dip, so as long as the temp of the house is above that, the furnace never comes on.

It's always off in the summer, so usually about September we'll set it.

We just had a 17 degree Celsius day in Oshawa. Heat is on, but set low, so the furnace won't come on. We turned the heat on when we had those 4 degree Celsius days a few days ago.

There would be absolute mutiny in this house if I kept the temps as low as you do. I keep it around 20C but it sometimes gets set up a bit higher by other people in the house.

This yr I turned it on Nov 1st. We had a few cold days and while I can live with it cold my kids not so much

My cats have the nerve to complain at night if the temp is set too low; putting it up 1/2 a degree so it runs a cycle stops the nonsense lol

The heat has been on in our house for a long time already - probably over a month.

I set the thermostat in September. I used to not set it until November, but with the little kiddies... I feel guilty if I don't :-) I now set it at 19-20, before kids I used to set it at 17-18. I also used to have it go down 2 degrees at night, but my daughter won't use blankets, so I stopped doing it for her sake.

Yeah, I should have mentioned I do not have kids. So that makes a difference in heating as well. Plus with an apartment below me my floors aren't cold, they are usually room temperature. Today however it is supposed to hit around 16 degree's.

I've been tempted a few days to turn it on. Holding out for a few more days at least. It's only really cold in here if you are sitting around not doing anything.

I've got programmable thermostats, which I find really excellent. For the weekdays, I have them set at 17 degrees, but 30 minutes before I wake up in the morning, the temperature is programmed to come up to 20, and then go back down when I leave for work. Then it comes back up to 20 shortly before I usually get home, and back to 17 degrees at 1045 when I am usually in bed or on my way. I can override at any time if I am home and want it higher. Weekends I have a different program. It also helps that I have underfloor heating, so my toes stay toasty and that makes everything feel warmer too!

we had it on about a month ago. but then hubby turned it off. now im thinking maybe i should turn it back on. its electric $$!!!!!!!! usually we turn on one heater and it heats the whole place up.

I usually wait till nov 1 but this yr dh turned it on oct 15:(
