Every Year my family(DH,DD and I)like to make a donation to a local charity,we make smaller donations to our local food bank throughout the year but like to do something a bit better each christmas,we try to pick a different charity to donate to each year as we like to spread it around as much as we can, this year we chose a local womens domestic violence shelter.

We decided to make gift baskets, the shelter houses a maximum of 22 women and their children so we made 22 gift baskets for the ladies. The baskets contain toilitries such as deoderant, razors, shave cream, pads and tampons, toothpaste etc..as well as treats such as lindor chocolates, mini boxes of chocolates, popcorn, tea or hot chocolate singles and a few extras,a novel each, candles, nail polish, vitamins, those 5.00 la roche kits and other items.

Items were purchased with coupons, some i redeemed for at shoppers and a wonderful scer taranottawa even sent me a pkg of items for the baskets and some great coupons to buy more with(she sent some deoderants, razors, shampoos etc..)Thank you so much.

I hope the baskets help make the ladies christmas a little brighter.

We were hoping to be able to provide something for the kids as well but the folks who manage the shelter said they have no way of knowing how many kids or what gender or ages they will be as they have a constant turnover especially at christmas(so sad) so were thinking instead of getting something that could benifit all the kids who stay there,my daughter has suggested a wii and a couple of games as we can get one at a pretty good price at SDM

    Any suggestions?

Thats awesome! I spent time in a shelter before and I would have appreciated those items, I cant tell what you used as the basket, it looks like a bowl? ...I was considering doing this as a payback for the care I received in such shelters, but I want the whole thing to be usable, if its a bowl or garbage can it can be used to furnish her future home

i think a wii would be an excellent gift and a great way for the kids to have a little bit of a distraction, how thoughtful of you!

from my experience i'd say also include some rechargeable batteries and a few extra wii-motes if you can!

I also support my local woman shelter I used laundry baskets It was suggested to me to include cleaning supplies, as we all know how expensive it can be to start out in your first new place, needing everything like that

Great idea! Thanks for doing this!
