Excellent advice. I would phrase it this way: It is not always the amount of coverage, it is the quality of the contract. You need to be sure that your coverage will allow for as much flexibility as possible, including repatriation and the ability of a family member to stay with the injured or seriously ill person and have their expenses covered.

Please...please...PLEASE - read the EXCLUSIONS of ALL policies - especially that which is on a credit card extension. Remembering that some of these policies state if you have EVER been treated for something - it may be excluded. So..for example - if you have been diagnosed with something and are on medication to keep it in check and have been for 5 years with no change. But .. you have a flare up in another country and go to the hospital and it turns out that underlying issue was the reason for your visit - that may be excluded and the company won't pay.

If you or your family has any medical condition - it might even be worth a quick call to the claims department BEFORE signing up, to make sure there would be coverage.

Great post! Pre_existing conditions are generally not covered. If they were, the cost of insurance for all of us would be exorbitant. When people say 'that isn't fair' I ask if they would insure someone who had a heart attack five years ago if the money were coming out of their pocket were a claim to be filed. Once a person has lost their good health, they have often lost the abity to purchase insurance. Someone said earlier that if you are really healthy you may decide not to buy the insurance. But what if you are involved in an accident, get severe food poisoning, etc.? Those things can occur no matter what the state of one's health.
