Starting July 1 , 2013 the current passport fees will increase dramatically .
For example the current $ 87 for a 5 yr Adult PP will become $ 120 ..that's a pretty hefty increase ..IMO . So if your PP has expired or is about to expire try to renew it before July 1 , 2013 .
But the good thing is now a 10 yr Canadian PP is finally available ..and it cost's $ 160 for 10 yrs , so it might be an economical option for a few , plus you don't have to go through the hassle of taking a PP photo and paying for it every 5 yrs , you can just do it once every 10 yrs
10 yr PP might not be a good option for kids as their face changes a lot as they grow and they might not look like their PP photo in 10 yrs ..( but I think for kids upto 15 , only a 5 yr PP will be available and a 10 yr option won't be available )..but for older kids 15 + a 10 yr option should be available , I think.
Also the new epassport with a security chip will be available too .This thread is currently associated with: N/A

The increase is likely to encourage ppl to get the 10 year one. Which actually ends up being cheaper and less work and money on the passport office's end. sounds like a win-win to me

I was going to do mine soo but i think im going to hold off until july now so i can do the 10 yr passport. It works out cheaper than doing a 5 yr and then another 5 year one afterwards and i can see the price going up again

Costco coupon book for East (April 8-21) shows $6.99 fee for passport photos, in case anyone is imminently going to submit a renewal application soon.

I just realized if I do the older sons now I will save money as the child's passport cost is increasing as well both our passports expire in October but since we are traveling in late summer I should do his now.. I am going to wait to do mine as I want the 10 yr one and I will have 6 weeks for it to arrive before we travel.
Thanks for the link OP. it has been very helpfulFriends don't let real friends pay full price.

I have to completely re-do my passport because I got married and changed my name. I have to pay for a new one even though it has not expired yet. We rarely travel, so I'm not sure if I am going to replace my passport before the changes come into effect.

i wish i had to option to get the 10 year passport when i got my last one. i travelled to europe and have visas and stamps in that passport. also while over there the EU is using the 10 year passport already and its enhanced with a microchip. i enjoy getting entry stamps in my passport and wish i had longer to get more of them.

Wow, these new fees are steep! To renew 2 adult passports and 2 kids (which I'll need to do in maybe 3 years), I will need to shell out $434, plus tax for the 10 year passport? That's a lot!!
