I just do not get it!!!!

I'd love to learn how to sew! My mom was a great sewer and made a lot of my Halloween costumes, and doll clothes when I was young. I wish she could have taught me, but she died before she could teach me a lot of things.

How would you "great sewers" suggest getting into sewing. Take lessons? Buy a machine? What kind? Any tips for newbies would be great!

My first machine when I finished design school was a janome that was $2200 almost 25 years ago! I had to pay it off on a monthly plan!!!! I still have it and it sews thru anything!! I did go computerized about 7 years ago it is a singer from sears and I LOVE IT!!
Sewing shops have lessons,there are tons of online tutorials,I would help if I could. Make a starter project like pj pants or an apron?
