A video of 11 mostly silver-haired guys crooning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” inside an Oakville Tim Hortons is capturing the public’s heart.

“They had a little whistle thing to set the pitch and then they just started singing,” Danfi Parker told the Star on Thursday.
Parker and a friend sat amazed and delighted through a few Sinatra songs Monday night and then picked the Elton John standard when the singers rattled off a list of possible requests. Parker, 26, started filming with his mobile phone.
The video has captured more than 1,000 views in two days.
“The first song caught everyone off guard,” said Parker. The men had filed in together, bought their coffees and sat down in two rows at a few tables before they launched into the impromptu late-night coffee shop concert.
It ended with a round of applause from the patrons, he said.
“It’s not scripted,” admitted Jack Smye, who is the warbler at the far left in the video. “It’s a long-standing tradition. Halfway through our coffee, we sing.”
But it is a regular gig, every Monday night at the Tim Hortons on Iroquois Shore Rd., after the barbershop harmony chorus called The Entertainers breaks from practice.


The group, which numbers 35 in all, has been a barbershop chorus performing in and around Oakville for 44 years, at business functions, seniors’ homes and their annual concert.
The chorus, with men ranging in age from their 50s to 90, sings acappella, in the four-part close-harmony style dubbed barbershop back in the 1920s.
“It’s a special sound where your voice has to blend in,” said Smye, who is the group’s director of membership. The late legendary Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti “could not have been a barbershopper.”
One of the Entertainers was a professional with a career that included Broadway, he said, but “most of us are just amateurs who enjoy singing.”
The 73-year-old retired engineer confessed to “always singing around the house,” but never, ever in the shower.
He could always carry a tune but got involved in barbershop singing two decades ago and has found his voice has improved over the years.
“Your voice, in reality, is one of the last bodily functions to go.
