Hives everywhere

I just need to vent.

I had the stomach flu 3 weeks ago, and then next day I broke out in huge hives all over my stomach. They went away within 2 hours, fast forward to friday night, ate supper, broke out in hives a half hour later, they covered the top half of my body. Sunday night, I woke up 2 hrs after falling asleep, once again, covered from the hips up, went to the hospital, was prescribed an epi pen. Don't have the cash for one til payday. Tonight, laying in bed, started breaking out as I fell asleep, took benedryl, currently waiting for it to kick in.

Can't get in to my family doctor until next Tues morning.
I just want to know what I'm allregic to! I haven't changed anything in my diet or routine. Mind you, I did have my first baby 1 year ago.

My hubby suffers from hives all the time from unknown causes. He is allergic to pork so if something he ate came into contact with pork big hives. But when he is stressed he gets hives too but sometimes like yesterday he got hives on his arms for no known reason. He never got allergies until recently as he got older. One thing that helped him is a food diary and I did the same before I realized I was allergic to milk.

Hives are rough. If you aren't having any other symptoms such as swelling of the throat, shortness of breath etc. I don't know that you want to be using an epipen for hives. Check with your doctor on that one. It's common to develop hives after a virus such as a cold or flu. If you haven't changed anything in your diet or hygiene habits and you aren't under extra stress, I'd guess it's because of your flu. Benadryl is a great choice. Hope it clears up soon!

My throat was closing off on sunday night, that's why they prescribed the epi pen. I do have more stress than usual lately, which was what I thought it was from. But it didn't quite explain the reaction I got when I was sleeping. Hoping they can figure out why this is happening to me. I'm severely allergic to amoxcillan (sp?) , they found that out when I was 4. I also live in an older trailer that has had leaks before (I rent, and the landlord said he had fixed them before we moved in 8 months ago)

I had never broken out in hives before, but I had a terrible pneumonia/bronchitis thing back in November. A week in, it turned to a high fever, and I broke out in big, swollen, itchy hives all over the place -- and this was before I had even been prescribed any kind of medication. They came and went over the next two days. Maybe it's something related to the illness you had?

Hmmm...it's really hard to say what it could be. I feel for people who have to buy epipens without insurance, they are really expensive and expire in a year or two. (When you do pick one up, make sure you ask for the longest dated one since expiry dates vary depending on when each one was ordered).

and here i thought this was a discussion on Bees....ha ha ha.
have you thought about going to a walk-in clinic? maybe the dr. there can get you in for testing?

I had a lung infection a few years ago and broke out in hives really bad ,i later find out that it was strawberries i had eaten.

LAUNDRY DETERGENT! did you recently switch brands? when i was younger, my mother switched to tide and all of the sudden I was covered in hives! mainly my stomach and my ankles.

We couldn't figure it out because it was getting worse each day! Eventually, she switched back to Purex and now the hives are gone. The odd time my clothes ever get washed or come into contact with other clothes that were washed in Tide, I get a few hives. In fact, I have 1 hive right now lol. I suspect its because I did some laundry at a friend's house... perhaps she uses tide and the residue was in the machine??

I hope you find the solution!! PS- laundry detergent will not show from an allergy test lol. I got soooooo many done. All inconclusive.

PS- benedryl cream!!!!! takes away itchiness and redness!!!!

at one point i was breaking out in hives for a month everyday and i took a allergy test nothing unusal just allergy from trees and grass but mild. Until i went to an allergy specialist he told me when i had a virus and took advil it caused me to break out in hives.

Wow, what you learn by reading here. I'm so sorry you had a bad spell. I was going to say too Laundry Detergent. When I was younger I could have washed my clothes with ....well I can't think of a clever thing here but you get the jist and now...big difference, that is why I love the samples. I have also been getting hives and that never used to happen, stressed aswell but I think Sunlight is not helping the situation.

And thanks to everyones input...Benedryl cream??? I never knew - I love it. I have a J&J coupon I believe for Benadryl and I will be going to look for that next time I'm shopping. Benedryl is one of the best all purpose boo-boo helpers ever invented for humans and pets.

Thanks everyone, I will be picking up some benadryl cream for sure. I found out my insurance covers the epipen, so that's a relief. Also, I have not switched laundry detergent for a very long time (close to 8 years) I've stuck with gain and purex, because of a bad break out when I was younger (had to take steroid pills to get rid of the rash, and it was 2 days before prom *bawling*)
I started a food diary today. Also a "chemical diary" which really is what I use, shampoo, conditioner, dishsoap, etc.

Please please please have a thorough look around floors windows etc, to check for mold, just in case. It can cause an allergic reaction in some people, definitely if you have developed an allergy to it.

Sounds like you're having the most reactions in your trailer? You mentioned the trailer used to leak but has since been fixed, it's worth having it checked out even if you can't find anything. Possibly ask the landlord where they leaks were and start in those areas. Could be growing anywhere and causing you problems. Benadryl would treat the symptoms, but if you can't find the source it will just keep happening. My major concern is it is mold, it could be toxic black mold, and things could just keep getting worse and worse..

The reason I mention it is that people who are allergic to Penicillin based drugs (Amoxicillin) are often also allergic to mold.

I hope you find an answer soon. We went about 6 months where every time my son got sick (cold, ear infections, etc...) he would break out in hives. If it was an ear infection, he would swell up as well (face). We didn't go the allergy testing route, as my doctor said that with kids they don't recommend testing until the symptoms continue for about 6 months. The hives and swelling magically stopped around the 6 month mark. We went through so much Benedryl with him!
