Went to NF for groceries this morning and saw that the price of Milk has gone up
Last week a 4 L Jug was $5.72, today the same of Baxters is $6.17 and Farmers was $6.37
For some reason 4L in the bags was $5.97
I think at this rate it might be cheaper to have a cow in the backyardThis thread is currently associated with: No FrillsTrade List /Wishlist: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/382792-dreamcatcher1962s-trade-wish-lists-canada/#post5928904

I think we pay more for milk than anywhere else in the country. I *think* that some major stores can apply to sell it for less than the standard price, maybe that's what was going on and now it's reverted to its normal price? Fortunately we don't drink much in my family; DH and I put it in coffee, DS can be convinced to drink it now, but won't drink it plain very often. It must be hard for families with several children who all need it.

I was told at Costco quite some time ago that the retailers have a price range in which they can sell it.
They can't sell it below a certain price or above a certain price but can charge anywhere inbetween those two prices.
I questioned it that day because in Costco it was selling for $5.25 and in either Sobeys or Superstore it was close to $7 (that was nearly 2 years ago).
On average we go through 3 x 4L a week.Trade List /Wishlist: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/382792-dreamcatcher1962s-trade-wish-lists-canada/#post5928904

Ohhh Nooooo not again! It was close to $8 a 4lt jug before No Frills came to town. We went through about 4 liters a day back then so close to $70 for milk in a week!! How are we supposed to feed our families healthy food when its sooo expensive?? My daughter has been asking me for grapes for about 2 weeks now, but for 3.99 a pound the grocery store can keep them! With coupons I can buy 14 x2 Lt bottles of pop this week for the same price as one 4 Lt jug of milk. How is this right?!

I wouldn't have thought so until I started popping in the downtown location, but Pete's Frootique can have some good deals on fruit (and it's VERY nice fruit, better than what you see at Sobeys). I got grapes there I think last week for $2 a pound.
My 4 litre jug of milk at Costco today was $5.19.Last edited by Zonny; Fri, Feb 8th, 2013 at 08:35 PM.

Costco is definitely the cheapest, second is Walmart. I think the DC walmart has it for $5.27. If you go over to Halifax (say, Queen St. Sobeys), it was always over $7. And almost $8 here in the New Minas stores.
Time to start drinking powered, lol.

Canadian milk may be more expensive, but unlike U.S. milk it is always free of artificial hormones.

The cheapest milk here in New Glasgow is, I kid you not, from the Irving/Circle K on East River Road - a friend pointed it out to me. It is $5.79 for a 4l jug, and it is Scotsburn brand. I have forced myself to get past the taste of milk from a plastic jug jut to save money. Cheapest 2L cartons are Shopper's every second week for $3.05 and Lawton's at $3.29. The 4L jugs everywhere else range from high 6-something to near $8. It is ridiculous!
You would think with the major production facilities and dairy producers being within Atlantic Canada, milk would be cheaper for us. It makes no sense.

Although milk is cheaper where I live, it keeps going up in price here. We drink about 2x 4L of milk a week in our household. 4L of Milk at Sobeys is $4.69 and $4.89. The COOP chargers a lot more, but I just can't remember the exact amount.

Wow. 4L of milk at our grocery stores (Atlantic Superstore, Sobeys, Walmart) is $7.89! Yes, I'm in Nova Scotia. We try to buy it at Lawtons (2L's) for $3.29 each, or Pharmasave - $6.49 for 2-2L's.

I am in Ontario. Wow! My heart goes out to you all from the Eastern provinces. I had no idea you were charged that much. We are almost all DF here, but I still buy the 3 bag thing for 1 son and the new kitty too. Great sale is like $3.97-$4.59, for that 3 bag size, plus I had $1.00 off coupons at times as well. Mostly I believe it is just slightly under $5.00 - $5.79 ?? I buy 2%.
