This one is kind of a story.

So my ex-boyfriend's father passed away last week and he's been living/working in Ottawa for almost two years now whilst his brother and father were living in Calgary. He came out to Calgary and I think his family at this point in time was just way, way too overwhelming for him so he asked if he could come up here and spend a couple of days with me. I said sure. I told him if he wanted to talk, I was here for him, otherwise I was just going to go about my life like he wasn't even here. (Give him the space he needed).

We've basically been arguing since he showed up on Thursday. His father was a very wealthy man, so whenever he's wanted something in life he's just gone to the store and bought it. I've been hearing "I can't believe you don't have a tv!" and "I can't believe you only have a twin sized bed" and "What kind of a 24 year old doesn't have a coffee maker?" Well me. I don't drink coffee. I know how much of a tough time he's going through though so I've been letting it go.

This morning we were talking about things we want... out of life, for our futures, for our homes... stuff like that. One of the things that came up was my apartment and what I would get for it if I could. He said "If you could go to the store, any store, and get whatever you want for your apartment right now, pay for it in full and bring it back here, what would you get?" I told him I'd get one of those magnetic spice racks, one that can go on my fridge. I've always wanted one, I think they're incredibly cool and really handy. Plus it would save storage space in my cupboards (my apartment isn't that big!)

A little bit later he told me he was going to go find a gym that he could go to for a couple hours. Like two hours later, he came home with magnetic spice containers! 15 of them! And spices to match!!!

    (Sorry if it's massive!)

I'm in the process of putting them together!!!

Initially I was peeved that he bought it for me. One of the reasons we broke up back when we dated was because of things he was buying me things but when he told me why he bought it, it reminded me why he's the sweetest person ever. He said "I could have asked anyone in the world what they wanted and whether they knew my finances or not, 99.99% of them most likely would have said big screen tv, or complete home entertainment system, or matching furniture set. I ask you, and you want a spice rack. I've always appreciated the way you're able to find so much value in the simple things in life, so I wanted to make you happy."

What a sweetheart eh? All this stuff going on in his life and he's thinking about nice things he can do for me.

Plus I got so many new spices!! Dinner's going to be wicked good tonight!

That's so nice. He owed you that, say thanks, and move along. If he cooks dinner tomorrow, then keep him, lol.

Good for you for being so accommodating. And good for him for thinking of you when he's going through a rough time. And I want a spice rack like this too!

Good for you for helping him out - and that was very sweet of him thanks for sharing! I love stories like this!

P.S. my sister has this spice rack - it is awesome! She mounted a magnetic strip on her wall (not sure if it came with it our not, but it is awesome!)

    ENJOY!

Actually, he even ended up cooking me dinner tonight! I'm not normally a fan of fish but it was pretty good.

It's a pretty fantastic spice rack. I've got them all organized now. And yeah I have seen people put the magnetic strips on their walls - because I'm renting though I'm really not able! I wish. Maybe if I ever get a place of my own.

It's definitely an awesome option if anyone is thinking of looking for one. I recommend them!

Simple pleasures. Nothing like saving storage space in a small apartment.
    Condolences to your friend.
