Vote for Eriluo's son and autism service dog to win $1500 and a year supply of treats
Thanks to PsychoJo's suggestion, I've entered the Milk-Bone's "Love is in the Air" contest.
As a bit of background, my ten-year old son Jack, was diagnosed with autism shortly after his 5th birthday. I had my suspicions when as early as 10 months old, he wasn’t making all his milestones, but as a first-time mother, I wasn’t quite sure what the problem was. However, my motherly instincts seemed to kick in every time I read the few pages in the baby book that dealt with autism. Sure enough, my spidey senses were bang on and our family began the autism adventure after Jack’s official diagnosis.
With the increased prevalence of autism in today’s society, which cause is still a mystery and speculative, our respective communities throughout the province have geared up with a whole spectrum of educational, health and social services dedicated to autistic individuals, which is wonderful for an autism family like ours.
One of those incredible services available for autistic kids are Autism Service Dogs. I had always known about service dogs, in terms of those for the visually-impaired, but never realized the extent of what service dogs could be used for, until a work colleague discussed her adventures with puppy raising a service dog for an autistic family. This resonated with me and I began to research Autism Service Dogs and soon learned of a new world that could be opened to our family.
After a 29 month wait from application process to receiving training on our dog Google, Jack met him yesterday. And the photo in the contest, is the one I snapped when Jack and Google first met for the very first time.
