Nowadays desktop machines are around for those who need better performance, especially for things like gaming and programs that do lots of rendering (though performance laptops are getting better and better). You will get used to typing on a laptop very quickly, so don't let that deter you. In terms of which laptop to buy my one advice is make sure you're not paying extra for things you don't need. If you don't need a good graphics card don't buy a laptop with an extra good one - instead you could get a better processor or hard drive for the same price, which will make your laptop faster all around.
We went from a Windows desktop to a Macbook with a separate monitor and keyboard for when the computer is at home. Since I keep all my financial stuff on my computer (being self employed), I was a little uncomfortable leaving the computer at home when we travelled. Now the laptop is my main computer and can be used as a desktop - with bigger screen and easier keypad at the desk.
A little tip.... if you find laptop screens small...
- look for laptops with a larger screens like 17" or larger
- laptops allow you to plug in external monitors. If you already have a computer, you can use your old screen.
- monitors are so cheap now (I remember when they were $2000 each!). Some laptops allow you to plug 2 or 3 monitors to give you more workspace.
- for travel, external monitors are heavy and bulky. I just recently discovered "USB monitors" that are self powered when plugged into your USB port.

- most of us have HD tv's. Many have a VGA or HDMI port that allows you to plug your laptop in for a big screen experience.
Do you watch movies with your laptop? Consider external speakers. I recently took this affordable Source USB soundbar on a cruise ship. Love the deep low bass that my laptop can't deliver. At home, I have a 5.1 surround bar.

Laptop is very convenient and some are cheap now. For me, I prefer the Dell. their hardware is high quality and the customer support is good.
If you're in the price-range of a laptop, you may want to take a quick look at some of the best tablet contenders. For example, a Microsoft tablet I tried recently (Surface Pro 2 I think?) was surprisingly functional as a laptop despite really portable. Major downside is poor app availability compared to other tablets.
Desktop is only really good for Gaming. Laptop is great for everything else, even if you are working long hours, just plonk it on the desk. If you want a larger screenspace you can even plug in additional monitors.
You can even plug the laptop into your HD TV for an even larger screen!

I have a Desktop, Laptop and several tablets, but when I want to do the difficult stuff, I retreat to my Desktop. An i 7 processor and 8 gig of ram help a lot . Everything runs smooth as silk, and with so much ram and so many processors, things never slow down.
Hey, there's the Razer Blade. I go to college and I have big gaps in between classes so I wanted a laptop that I could bring with me to school, but still play games in between classes. This laptop weighs nothing, it's very lightweight but expensive. I bought it like $1900 with a discount using a gift card from GIIFT.Quote:
