Just a thought, I am wondering if they are also trying to slowly lead the public towards facing his death. While he is important and respected all over the world, he means so much more to South Africa than anywhere else of course. This will be a huge loss, who knows how the public will react. There's the public security issue also. It could get out of hand if not handled properly.

Yes, Patty, that's what's been happening since he's been in more critical condition - I remember reading articles similar to these - he's father, grandfather, the inspiration...

His 95th birthday is July 18 - recognized in 2009 by the UN as Nelson Mandela International Day.
After Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in 2008 where he said “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now,” Mandela Day was born.
Mandela's Day serves as an annual call to action to people everywhere to contribute to the global movement for doing good by effecting change within their communities. During the day, individuals around the globe are urged to give 67 minutes of their time to make a change in their community and thus, the world.

Birthday card made by school children
Happy 95th, Mr. Mandela!
South Africa celebrated Nelson Mandela's 95th birthday with acts of charity on Thursday, a milestone capped by news that the former president's health was improving after fears that he was close to death during ongoing hospital treatment.
"He continues to respond positively to treatment and we are encouraged by the progress he is making," President Jacob Zuma said after visiting Mandela. A statement from Zuma's office said Mandela was steadily improving.
"We are proud to call this international icon our own as South Africans and wish him good health," Zuma said in the statement. He thanked South Africans for supporting Mandela during his hospitalization with "undying love and compassion" and responding to a call to give the beloved figure "the biggest birthday celebration ever this year."

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African President Nelson Mandela, who has been in hospital since early June with a lung infection, is showing "great resilience" although he remains in a critical but stable condition, the presidency said on Saturday.
"While at times, his condition becomes unstable, the doctors indicate that the former president has demonstrated great resilience and his condition tends to stabilize as a result of medical interventions," it said in its latest update on the condition of the 95-year-old anti-apartheid hero.
"Doctors are still working hard to effect a turnaround and a further improvement in his health and to keep the former president comfortable," the presidency added in the statement.

Probably going home to die with dignity.
What a life and it's not over yet. I can't imagine after being in prison for so long and then coming out and surviving after such a physical and mental toll on the body.

President Zuma : Mandela dead.
South Africa's first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has died, South Africa's president says.
Mr Mandela, 95, led South Africa's transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after 27 years in prison.
He had been receiving intense home-based medical care for a lung infection after three months in hospital.
In a statement on South African national TV, Mr Zuma said Mr Mandela had "departed" and was at peace.Last edited by Darth Penguin; Thu, Dec 5th, 2013 at 04:56 PM. Reason: add link
