not sure if anyone listened to cross country checkup,
it is a 2 hour (no break for news etc) show,
where people call in on the topic.
i found it very interesting, lots of people black and white
called in from across this country, some who had lived
in south africa, including the host suhana marchand,
and of course the added politicals.
started with suhana who's family left south africa
she could not ride on a ferris wheel when she was 4,
and her father decided to get his family out of there.
and she was able to tell mandela about that - can you imagine that?

blah blah blah, but i do find it always interesting to hear what other canadians
and sometimes people from another country have to say
(in this show at least someone who lives here and there)

I listened to the second hour, madchives, it was very interesting for sure.
I also had heard the interview the late Barbara Frum had done with Mandela three days after his release.

to south africa.

tried to remember when i was involved with the free nelson time
thinking 1980 ish, the rallys, concerts etc.
late in mandela's time though darn.

I've been watching/listening to the memorial, streaming by South Africa's public broadcaster.
I started watching it just as Ban Ki-Moon was speaking.
Well, here's a momentous handshake - Obama and Cuba's Raul Castro

There seems to be some mixed feeling Mandela. His early were rather ugly. But he went to prison and came out a wonderful man. That is what we expect from people, to change for the better. He may not have been perfect, but 'Perfect People' tend to either be frauds or don't move people.
There is no doubt that the people who were moved upwards by Mandela saw the good and few celebrated the things he did in his early years, so yes, the man did bring great value and provided a higher level of freedom and hope to people who needed it most.
It's rather unfortunate the media once again spent the bulk of the press coverage on more immature Obama behavior, but is the same media who can't get enough of Miley Cyrus.
For expanding freedom and sowing seeds of peace at a time he could have centralized and expanded his own power over people, for letting joy and peace live in his heart rather than anger and bitterness, I think this man was a real blessing and wish all mankind would learn from his example.

in the early days nelson mandela was a lawyer - but that didn't help anyone
so the anc was created with a violent way to deal with a country that wanted
black people gone---- mandela went to prison after a trial that included this
http://youtu.be/-CNewYDzeDg
they were going to put him to death
this trial was supposed to be his death sentence

Ah, that is just lovely! The translation -
Asimbonanga [we have not seen him]
Asimbonang' uMandela thina [we have not seen Mandela]
Laph'ekhona [in the place where he is]
Laph'ehleli khona [in the place where he is kept]
Asimbonanga
Asimbonang 'umfowethu thina [we have not seen our brother]
Laph'ekhona [in the place where he is]
Laph'wafela khona [in the place where he died]
Sithi: Hey, wena [We say: hey, you]
Hey, wena nawe [Hey, you and you]
Siyofika nini la' siyakhona [when will we arrive at our destination]
The song was written during Mandela's incarceration as a call for his freedom.
