Ive just started putting out resumes to get a job in my new field but Ive run into a problem. I cannot track down ANY of my previous supervisors to use as a reference. I have no idea what to do. The past 5 years Ive only worked at four places and this is what ive found out about three of them.

    1. The restaurant closed down no forwarding numbers or address
    2. The manager moved out west and the assistant got fired for theft
    3. My old manager or co workers no longer work there and they cannot give out personal info

I have no idea what to do when I am asked for references now.

Ask your boyfriend or a good friend? Just make sure you let them know details ahead of time

If anything they usually just ask the time frame when you worked.

You say new field - did you get any training for it? You could always ask a teacher or instructor to be a reference, at the very least they can attest for things like attendance and work habits.

I feel your pain. I've lost two jobs due to the stores closing, and my supervisor at the place that is still open, was fired soon after I left, so it's hard for me to give references. I have one to give. Give facebook a try like someone else said, or get a friend to be your reference. Good luck!

Have you tried to find them on linkedin (Facebook for professionals)? It is the best way to find former co-workers and supervisors as well as finding a job. Best of luck to you!

I find a lot of the times they don't even bother to call my references before hiring me. You can use old profs/instuctors from school, even old coworkers that didn't supervise you I mean what do you have to lose? As long as they are aware someone might call them regarding hiring you then it should be fine. Good Luck
