The only thing you need to be careful of is that some of these are simply paid promotions that Gizmo Richards has put on his list. Some of the programs are purely of personal preference, and others I would classify as useless, but nevertheless his site is a good place to browse free apps.
Just be careful as always, and research - repeat - RESEARCH - before you install. I got his newsletters in my email for a couple of years before he set up the website. Just because a piece of software is made by a big company doesn't mean it can't still wreak havoc in your system.

Tragically, yes. Norton actually qualifies as malware in the tactics they use to embed the program in the system and also the way they throw popups on your screen to coax you to upgrade or buy their products.
Personally, I don't use ANY of these programs, I prefer to keep my system lean and clean of programs that can alter the system if at all possible. This means running an integrated firewall/antivirus/antispyware, one program to do it all.
For utilities I use Microsoft's System Internals Suite, a group of standalone programs, small in size and written by a Microsoft dev.
For everything else, I use the Windows Ultimate Boot CD for every other conceivable need. - defragging, drive imaging, backup/restore, spyware/virus scans, system info, drive formatting and partitioning, etc. When you build the CD, programs are integrated into it that are industry tested and trusted. And they run much more effectively when the Windows filesystem is not active.
