For a ten year old? I recommend the Wii U. It can play almost all the Wii games, but has its own exclusives like mario kart 8, donkey kong and the new smash bros. The Wii U has plenty of fames for younger audiences. And for older audiences there are games like bayonetta 2, fatal frame and xenoblade and more. There are good action games and 3rd person shooters and racing games and it has a great indie game library. I own both PS4 and Wii U and right now would lean more to Wii U. Plus Wii U has amazing retro games available to purchase digitally from the NES, Super NES, N64, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS and even digital Wii games like Metroid Prime Trilogy. It has great indie games like I said, including freedom Planet, typoman, Fast Racing Neo and more. There is a bundle that contains the Wii U and smash bros for wii u and the game splatoon ( An all ages shooter ( really its kid friendly but still a game adults can play)) for $279 (US) which many are carrying in black friday for 250 which is the equivalent of paying 130 for it. Wii U also has some good games coming next year like 2 Zelda games ( Twilight princess HD and a new original game) Star Fox Zero, Pokken Tournament (A Pokemon fighting game from the makers of Tekken) and Illusory Revelations ( An RPG) Among others unnannounced. The best part if, it has games for everyone
PS4 has great games but the best ones are not out yet. If you do go with PS4 Im not sure what the best games for kids are besides Lego games. There are good kids games but most are for older audiences.http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-...stRecentReview

There have been rumors that Nintendo will unveil a new console early next year fro release next holiday. They are going to talk about their next console, the NX next year but we dont know if they will release it next year. I felt I had to mention that

I Still think the Wii U is a good buy because there is no guarantee NX will be backwards compatible. PS4 and Xbox One do not really have that many all ages games. Most are geared to adults and the few they have are not good quality

Thanks for all your help! We still haven't decided which unit to go with... they all have pros and cons. The big-boy units have the great sports games, which he likes, but the WiiU has the Mario games which he also likes.. ugh, wish we could just get both but who the heck has that much money for games...
I'll let you know what we went with whenever it happens
