We've actually been very lucky to live in neighbourhoods where there is still door-to-door delivery.
As for stamp price going up, it's still a deal, considering what it does!

"Canada Post said it is also planning to cut between 6,000 and 8,000 positions over the next few years"
I'm not as worried about the mail delivery and price increase, but the job loss makes me sad. It seems as though so many employers that offer decent wages & good benefits are tightening their workforce and/or moving away from full-time permanent positions. (PotashCorp announced cuts last week as well) While it sounds like there won't be anyone laid off because of those retiring it definitely will increase competition for the fewer available positions. I have a few acquaintances, who are close to my age who didn't have the opportunity to go to university for 4 years as I did and instead began working at Canada Post because of the wages and benefits it provided over other jobs that didn't require additional education. It is sad to see that opportunity shrink as the cost of living continues to increase.

They have no choice but to do this. With automation, mail volumes have dropped off a cliff and they are on track to losing a billion dollars.

CanadaPost. CanadaPost. What can I say? Instead of increasing their customer service and delivering mail as they should thereby making happy customers that aren't too irritated with paying the cost of service, they'd rather slash the services. Up the prices. And tell you it's in your best interest. Riiighhhttt.
Me personally: I wouldn't be bothered walking to a box to get my mail. That's me. That's today. If for some reason I was injured or very sick with an illness it would be a problem and it will be a problem for many seniors and disabled people.
Instead of taking away door to door delivery entirely, why not reduce mail delivery door to door to only 2 days per week? I only use CP to mail a few Christmas cards a year and if I need to mail something that I need a tracking for. I truly mail maybe 6 pieces of mail a year. That's it. What bothers me about Canada Post is them not doing their job right. Sure they may be doing it as per protocol but it certainly isnt right.
When I lived in a house the living room window was right near the front door and many times I'd see my postal guy put the mail in and slip my package notice in it too. The package notice that says I wasn't there today and so I had to pick my package up at the post office. Same has happened in apartment life. Infact just 2 weeks ago I was awaiting a package and I received a notification email stating I wasn't here when they tried to deliver so I had to pick it up after 5pm the next day. I didn't even receive the paper notification! I called CP and I complained and the guy said that the carriers simply scan them when they leave and if they don't get to the destination that day they don't. He gave me the number that would have been on the card however for me to get my package.
Well I'm sorry but when I'm PAYING for an item to be delivered to me I EXPECT that someone attempt to deliver it and if I'm not here lave a notice. But don't just automatically slip notices in peoples mail boxes. My husband and I don't drive so to get to the CP place to pick it up it costs us $11.00 return. So instead of paying Canada Posts postal rate plus an additional $11.00 to go fetch my own package I paid to have delivered to me I would rather pay the additional $8-$10 that Puralator will charge me when they actually bring it to the door. Or buzz me in my case since I live in an apartment.
Canada Post losing money is Canada Posts own fault as much as it is also a sign of the times. Taking away services and hiking prices is NOT the way to fix their problem. And $1 to mail in Canada is sick, but considering I only mail maybe a few times a year at least a package of stamps will do me 2-3 years.Last edited by TaraF; Wed, Dec 11th, 2013 at 11:26 PM.

I went out tonight and bought 50 P stamps. May buy another 50 tomorrow.
My observation about seniors having access to mail, etc. is this: What has happened to our society that neighbours don't keep an eye out for each other? It's a pretty simple thing for a neighbour to pick up mail for someone who is shut-in. For several years, until she moved away, my kids shovelled the driveway (for free) for the widowed senior next door. It's just part of "community".
I am disappointed that I will no longer have a letter carrier deliver mail to my door, but realistically, snail mail is on a rapid decrease and the efficiencies of high volume are disappearing. Whether you are dealing with a family budget or a large corporation, money only goes so far. Sometimes difficult decisions have to be made.So many coupons....so little time!

i have yet to hear the logistics of how they plan to work this out.. there are MANY neighbourhoods that don't have a place to just randomly put up a community box (that isn't right on the side of the curb or in someone's yard) and what about apartment/condo buildings that already have a "community" style mailbox will they still be getting door delivery or will they set up massive amounts of boxes outside every apartment building? (it's not uncommon for an apartment building to have 20-30 units some easily have 50+)

this was the first info i heard on cbc radio yesterday.
i actually got a little sick to my stomach - they are always
up to something, but this? startled even me.
(who cpc put on a hit list, and did get, so does take a bit
to startle me, and of course adds to my discontent)
was on strike to try and stop those darn neighbourhood
boxes, for the same reasons a lot don't want them now
and the fact that the laws of our country stipulate that
services should be the same for all - lost that one.
may have been the same strike where we tried to keep
the post office jobs out of low paying drug store ones.
(was a while ago)
that was as usual amusing as cpc employees had weeks of training,
and of course an evil eye on them, but all of a sudden
'geee it's not that important, let's franchise that out.'
considering we are now beginning a time period, where
a lot of the citizens are older and getting older,
yet hoping to still be at home, this makes no sense.
heard interviews of a few people, but one woman stood out
and she is likely one of many --- uses a walker, and can't
imagine walking anywhere to get her mail, has no computer
so could not pay her bills that way - knows how to use one
but can't afford one.
cpc's answer - mindless dribble as usual.
so a ton of jobs going to be gone, good paying jobs,
we will then get postal service at the convenience store,
and a box that a crowbar is easily used to steal our mail.
btw - brilliant timing, as no gov't in session.
personally i do find it hard to understand how any canadian,
would think having door to door delivery just disappear doesn't
matter because it doesn't to you right now - sorry but i am sad
to see that

they always use the example of lettermail being at an all time low, but i am pretty sure that mail order shopping must be at an all time high.
they are making money, but very mis-managed and disorganized and probably wasting money like crazy on an assortment of things.
