I was keeping my expectations in check when I went looking for the new Smartsource tear pads at Save On Foods today in Vancouver. And it was a good thing because there was very little. The only one that was new or different from the others I found at Safeway a week ago was this one.

Yup, it's one of Smartsource's little coupon dispensing machines. I've seen them only occasionally over the years, usually at SDM spitting out Dr. Scholl's coupons or once in a long while at Save On Foods. I don't get the sense that there will be any wholesale change here anytime soon, though. I remember a few years ago being at a Stop 'n Shop in the U.S. and about 95% of the coupons in the store were from the little machines. There were 30 or 40 of the machines throughout the store. One drawback about the tiny coupons might be that it gives a lot less space for the manufacturer to illustrate and advertise their product.
What I'd really like to see is for all coupons to become scannable so the cashier doesn't have to decide anything. Either the coupon scanned matches with the product scanned or it doesn't. It would save a huge amount of everyone's time.
Perhaps this coupon is an example of what we'll see more of with it's American style bar code. It's even got an American address for the retailer to send to while saying "Valid in all U.S. states and Canada". I picked it up last week at a Buy Low store in Vancouver.
