I know… ever since they started putting the big buttons over the end of the post it's been challenging. Even to get one off without mangling it, especially if the pad is new and there's hardly any been taken off yet and they're packed in so tight. Here's my method. I did these drawings about a year and a half ago to help someone else out.
1. Remove any leftover bits of paper from previous coupons torn off so you start with a clean top of the coupon.
2. I'm right handed, so I start by tearing the coupon from the right and stop exactly half way across while lifting the coupon up off the right hand side of the button.
3. Then tear from the other side until the coupon is completely removed from the adhesive holding the pad together.
4. Carefully pull the coupon to the left, or even give it a bit of a twist around as you manoeuvre it off the post and button.
Whether you're trying to remove a coupon from a barbed post or a button ended post, I think it will always work best if you've got the coupon completely separated from the adhesive first. Sometimes I just run my index finger right across the top in one move or from the right and then the left. Once the coupon is loose and you can spin it around then it's ready for the sliding and/or twisting off the post. Some coupons are pretty thin and flimsy so it can help if you take two at once. Anything beyond two at a time can get progressively more difficult, which of course is the whole reason for the design.

Here's a perfect illustration below of the halfway tear you see in the second drawing. You can see it around the hole in this pic. I lifted from the right but stopped exactly half way. Then pulled the coupon to the left.

i do similar but i twist it upside down then peel it off so it completely separates it
