On this week's Sobeys flyer. Japanese sushi, Korean seaweed, Thai sauces are on sale for Chinese new year. It's mildly offensive, isn't it?
Do white people think Asians eat a lot of sardine? (How am I not aware of this stereotype?) Canned sardine and coconut water are on sale for Chinese new year. Ramen noodles is just weird. It's like having Kraft Dinner on sale titled "Merry Christmas!" It's rather perplexing. 5% of Ontario population is Chinese and Sobey couldn't find one to ask?
Well, it's more silly than offensive. My comedic thought was, "Maybe they would put fried chicken and moisturizer on sale for Black History Month."This thread is currently associated with: Sobeys

omg!! I also thought it was weird and offensive and I am white. Why is Sobey's doing this, do they not have a meeting somewhere before they design these flyers and sales and bounce these ideas off a sensible person there? Guess not.

Thanks for expressing your thoughts on this! Cultural stereotyping often goes unnoticed due to ignorance.

Koreans celebrate the Lunar New Year with the Chinese, but in 1873, Japan changed their calendar to the Gregorian calendar to celebrate their new year on January 1st. Sobey's is out by about 141 years. Ha ha! Thai new year is not until April.
I agree - sillyness!
Among the Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Thai families I know, none of them have ever served me food that included sardines or coconut water in the ingredients. I'm completely confused by that.
At least Sobeys gave a few people a laugh this week. I'm disappointed by the lack of good sales in the bulk of the flyers.
Even DH remarked "where are all the Chinese new year sales (meaning products)"? He's British/Scottish, so if he can tell, Sobey's has no excuse.

If you have the time, I think it would be a good idea for you to contact them about this, just explaining everything.

Your post made me look at the next flyers I saw, too.
Our Co-op flyer has a featured page, too - and on it is a can of Holiday luncheon meat.... so odd.
(mind you we like it, and buy it occasionally, but I don't know why it's on the Chinese New Year page?)
They also advertised this amber honey 8.88 for 750g
