Today we honor Ukrainian heritage with a reimagining of our logo as a traditional Ukrainian rushnyk. Embroidery has ancient roots in Ukraine, and so does the cultural significance of the kalyna digitally stitched into the center of today’s Doodle. This flowery shrub features prominently in Ukrainian literature, music, and folklore as a symbol of posterity and irrevocable family bonds, and often appears on the rushnyks sewn to celebrate Ukrainian births and weddings.

Pope calls for peace in Ukraine ahead of Independence Day
Vatican City, Aug 23, 2015 / 07:57 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Sunday the Holy Father again pleaded for peace in Ukraine as the nation faces ongoing cease-fire violations in a conflict that has claimed thousands of lives since early last year.
“With concern, I am following the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which has again worsened in recent weeks,” the pontiff said Aug. 23 during his weekly Angelus address.
“I renew my appeal that the commitments undertaken to bring about peace may be respected, and with the help of organizations and persons of good will, they might respond to the humanitarian emergency of the country.”
The Pope made these remarks from the papal palace to pilgrims and visitors gathered in Saint Peter's Square, one day ahead of Ukraine's national Independence Day.
The Holy Father's words come amid ongoing cease-fire violations, with one person having been killed and four others injured in clashes in Donetsk in the last 24 hours, according to Reuters.
“May the Lord grant peace to Ukraine, which prepares to celebrate its national holiday tomorrow. May the Virgin Mary intercede for us!” the Pope said.

Help Us Help the Children, a non-profit organization run by Canadian native, Ruslana Wrzesnewskyj.
The camp hosts orphaned children from across Ukraine for three weeks each summer. Wrzesnewskyj founded Help Us Help The Children after witnessing the appalling living conditions of Ukrainian orphans during a trip to adopt her own child.
Now, in its 20th year in operation, the camp was attended by over 450 children. The majority of the children were orphans, but in a reflection of wartime Ukraine, some were also kids who’d just lost their fathers to the war. One was just 6 years old.
This summer camp is just one of many programs that Help Us Help The Children runs throughout Ukraine. The most recent addition to their program is a bi-annual retreat and rehabilitation program for the widows and families of Ukrainian soldiers who have lost their lives in battle. But for the past 20 years, it’s this summer camp that has been the flagship of the group's activities.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko participates in Flag Day ceremonies in Kyiv on Aug. 23
President Petro Poroshenko and his family kicked off the holiday in a ceremony on St. Michael's Square and later went to Institutska Street near Independence Square to pay their respects to the Heavenly Hundred, the 100 demonstrators killed during the EuroMaidan Revolution that prompted President Viktor Yanukovych to flee for Russia last year.
"Our flag was born from primordial dreams of freedom. Gold color is a symbol of heavy crop and blue one is a sign of clear and peaceful sky over Ukraine, Poroshenko said. "Combination of blue and yellow is a dream about peaceful and prosperous life."
Poroshenko also called for national unity to take priority over political disagreements.
"Ukraine has undergone many difficulties. It has withstood the hardest year in its history and is ready now to move forward. Once again, I call for the unity. One and only national banner is more valuable than hundreds of political banners. It is my direct address to all political forces, first of all, to the members of the parliamentary coalition. Let us unite for the sake of Ukraine."
