Poroshenko - Fighting in the east 'must end this week'
He was speaking at talks involving an envoy from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and Russia's ambassador to Ukraine
"We must stop the gunfire this week," Mr Poroshenko said in a statement, a day after his inauguration in Kiev.
"For me, every day that people die, every day that Ukraine pays such a high price is unacceptable."
He stressed that it was vital to "restore the Ukrainian border so that the safety of each Ukrainian citizen is guaranteed".
The president's comments came after the meeting with the special envoy from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Heidi Tagliavini, and the Russian ambassador to Kiev, Mikhail Zurabov.
Mr Poroshenko also suggested to hold daily meetings of the so-called trilateral "contact group" to try to achieve a peaceful settlement in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Pro-Russian gunmen are continuing to hold a number of government buildings in the east, despite the ongoing "counter-terror operation" by Ukrainian government troops.

Russia Sent Tanks to Separatists in Ukraine, U.S. Says
WASHINGTON — The State Department confirmed on Friday that Russia had sent tanks and other heavy weapons to separatists in Ukraine.
A column of three T-64 tanks, several BM-21 “Grad” multiple rocket launchers, and other military vehicles crossed the border near the Ukrainian town of Snizhne, State Department officials said. Reports and images of the weapons circulated on Thursday, but there were conflicting claims about where they had come from.
“This is unacceptable,” said Marie Harf, a State Department spokeswoman. “A failure by Russia to de-escalate this situation will lead to additional costs.”
A Western official said that intelligence about the movement of the tanks and other weapons into Ukraine had been shared on Friday with NATO allies. Secretary of State John Kerry complained earlier this week about the flow of Russian arms to separatists in Ukraine in a phone call to Sergey V. Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister.
The T-64 is an obsolescent tank no longer in active use by Russian forces, but it is still kept in storage in southwest Russia.
“Russia will claim these tanks were taken from Ukrainian forces, but no Ukrainian tank units have been operating in that area,” the State Department said Friday afternoon. “We are confident that these tanks came from Russia.”
“We also have information that Russia has accumulated multiple rocket launchers at this same deployment site in southwest Russia, and these rocket launchers also recently departed,” it added. “Internet video has shown what we believe to be these same rocket launchers traveling through Luhansk.”

Ukrainian military plane with at least 49 aboard shot down
(CNN) -- A Ukrainian military plane with at least 49 passengers was shot down overnight Friday, a source said, making it the latest and likely one of the bloodiest single events in that nation's current period of turmoil.
The Ilyushin-76 military transport plane went down while approaching an airport in the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk, a source with the Ukrainian Anti-Terror Operation of the Ukrainian military forces told CNN.
The incident came hours after Ukraine's Kiev-based government -- which is trying to regain control of the country's restive south and east -- deemed successful an operation targeting pro-Russian separatists in the city of Mariupol.

The plane was carrying troops and military equipment and was about to land at the city's airport.
It is thought to be the biggest loss of life suffered by government forces in a single incident since Kiev began an operation to try to defeat the insurgency in east Ukraine.
Military spokesman Vladislav Seleznov said "preliminary information" suggested all 49 military personnel on board the aircraft - nine flight crew and 40 troops - were killed.
He added that the investigation was just beginning into how the separatists brought down the plane, but initial reports indicated that three "Stinger-like" missiles were used.

Day of Mourning in Ukraine -
The crowd in Kiev observed a moment of silence at noon local time (5 a.m. ET).
"We bow our heads to the heroes who lost their lives for the sake of their country, to prevent the war from coming into the house of each of us," Prime-Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.
"They lost their lives because they defended men and women, children and the elderly who found themselves in a situation facing a threat to be killed by invaders and sponsored by subhumans," he said. "First, we will commemorate the heroes by wiping out those who killed them and then by cleaning our land from the evil."
