Dr. Oleh Antonyshyn and Renata Roman packing up for the CUF Medical Mission to Ukraine. The medical team leaves today.
Dr. Oleh Antonyshyn, a plastic surgeon from Toronto's Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is among those heading overseas to help.
"We have a mission that consists of 25 volunteer surgeons and anesthetists and nurses, they are all devoting their time to this," he said.
Antonyshyn said that some of the patients they'll be treating sustained injuries during demonstrations, while others have been hurt in ongoing conflicts in eastern Ukraine.
He said there an estimated 1,700 people who were hurt in demonstrations and some 9,000 more were injured in the conflicts that have followed.
"The life-saving surgery has been done but there are just not sufficient resources to address the post-traumatic issues," he said.
The Toronto doctor's parents came to Canada from Ukraine and he has felt a need to go there to help, which he has already done once this year.

Two giant effigies of Vladimir Putin were paraded through the streets of Lewes, a town south of London, England, before being burned on a bonfire, as part of the annual Guy Fawkes celebrations.
One depiction of the Russian President showed him topless, carrying a rifle and standing on top of the crashed Malaysian Airlines jet MH17, which was shot down over eastern Ukraine earlier this year.
The other had him sitting on a tank showing Moscow's intervention in Ukraine -- was paraded through Lewes in southeast England, home of one of Britain's biggest bonfire celebrations. The Russian leader was naked except for bright green mankini, in the style of fictional comic character Borat.

Ukraine imposes passport controls around rebel area
Kiev (AFP) - Ukraine announced Thursday that anyone crossing in or out of areas controlled by pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country will have to show a passport.
The rule, announced by the border guards service, was aimed at sealing off the separatist region in what will de facto become an internal border in the seven-month conflict.
Ukrainian citizens will be allowed to travel in and out of the area "on condition of showing passports," the border guards service said in a statement.
Foreigners will "be sent to filtration points to determine the purpose of their visit" and will have "to show a passport or the required visa," the statement said.
Officials said the passport regime will apply to the area of what the government calls the "anti-terrorist operation," but did not specify the exact outlines of the area. The rule appeared to signal the creation of an increasingly formal border between the Russian-backed separatist zone and the rest of Ukraine.

Ukraine Stops Funding for Rebel-Held Regions
Ukraine on Wednesday announced it will halt government funding to those areas of its eastern regions controlled by Russian-backed separatists.
Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Wednesday the cutoff of funding to parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions will continue as long as they are held by "terrorists."
Yatsenyuk, who made his comments during a cabinet meeting, said the government would continue to supply gas and electricity to the areas.
The self-declared breakaway regions on Sunday defied Ukraine by holding elections meant to assert their autonomy from Kyiv.
Late Tuesday, President Petro Poroshenko ordered more troops deployed to key southern and eastern cities, to fend off any possible new pro-Russian rebel offensive.
A Poroshenko statement says the units will fortify the eastern cities of Mariupol, Berdyansk and Kharkiv against separatist incursions.
Ukraine security officials have reported a recent increase in cross-border Russian weapons transfers to rebels.

Ukraine says Russian military column has entered east of country

A column of 32 tanks, 16 howitzer artillery systems and trucks carrying ammunition and fighters has crossed into eastern Ukraine from Russia, the Kiev military said on Friday.
“The deployment continues of military equipment and Russian mercenaries to the frontlines,” spokesman Andriy Lysenko said in a televised briefing referring to Thursday’s cross-border incursion.
Nato said it has seen an increase in Russian troops and equipment along the Ukraine border was looking into the reports. “We are aware of the reports of Russian troops and tanks crossing the border between Ukraine and Russia,” a Nato military officer told Reuters. “If this crossing into Ukraine is confirmed it would be further evidence of Russia’s aggression and direct involvement in destabilising Ukraine.”
“Supplies of military equipment and enemy fighters from the Russian Federation are continuing,” Lysenko said. He added that five Ukrainian soldiers had been killed and 16 wounded in the past 24 hours despite the ceasefire.
Fifteen civilians were wounded by shrapnel in Donetsk, the mayor’s office said, in a night of shelling in two neighbourhoods near the ruins of the airport, where government troops are holding out.

Explosion at Kharkiv cafe hosting Azov Battalion fundraiser labelled 'terrorist' attack - UAToday (Video in English) - November 10, 2014
Cafe regularly attracted serving Ukrainian soldiers and Euromaidan activists. 11 people were injured, two seriously following the late evening blast at the cafe, which sent glass flying and damaged nearby cars.
The fundraising event was in aid of the Azov Battalion, an all-volunteer fighting force, that has played a key role in the battle with Russian-backed militants in Ukraine's war-torn eastern regions. Investigators told Reuters they were still gathering clues and had not fully established the cause of the explosion.

Invasion of Ukraine: Almost all the troops which stood near the Ukrainian border have entered Donbas.
According to the intelligence headquarters of the Anti-Terrorism Center (ATC), the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation has practically taken place.
As reported in the headquarters of the Anti-Terrorism Center, the latest figures for the past two days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine have acquired a full-scale character. Across the border of the Russian Federation, thousands of soldiers and hundreds of pieces of equipment, including tanks, armored vehicles and air defense systems have been deployed.
“To say that Russia sent troops – is to say nothing. For the past two days, the number of Russian military equipment and personnel of the Russian Federation army in Donbas increased tenfold. According to preliminary calculations, the majority of the forces of the Russian army, which had stood on the border with Ukraine, that is, near the areas controlled by the militants, entered Donbas. This is thousands of soldiers and hundreds of units of equipment.
Now, according to intelligence, the equipment is dispersed on the marches towards Mariupol, Debaltseve, Luhansk. The divisions of the Russian army who have entered the cities have no insignia. That is, factually, Russia practically marched its army into Donbas,” it was stated at the headquarters of the ATC.
It should be recalled that the first portion of the Russian armored vehicles was deployed near Donetsk three days ago.

NATO: Russian tanks, artillery, troops enter Ukraine
12.11.2014
http://images.unian.net/photos/2014_...98186-8594.jpg
"Over the past two days we have seen what the OSCE [Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe] has reported, NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Philip Breedlove told the agency on Wednesday while he was in Sofia, Romania.
“We saw columns of Russian military equipment, primarily Russian tanks, artillery, Russian air defense systems and combat troops, entering into Ukraine," Breedlove said.
"We have no clear data on the number, but we saw a lot of columns," he added.
The OSCE yesterday reported a convoy of 43 military trucks, unmarked, heading for militant-controlled Donetsk. In particular, it reported the transporting of five heavy howitzers and five multiple rocket launchers.
Russia used soldiers with unmarked uniforms and unmarked vehicles when it invaded the Ukrainian territory of Crimea in March.
"What I’m most worried about is that the former international border between Ukraine and Russia consists of continuous holes – it’s completely open," Breedlove said.

The question now is whether this is just a re-run of events in the summer or does a more significant clash beckon, perhaps one where the Kremlin may decide - in its terms - to teach the Ukrainians a military lesson.
General Breedlove also confirmed that Nato believes Russia is deploying nuclear-capable weapons to Crimea - a reference to reports that Russia is deploying short-range Iskander ballistic missiles there that could potentially be equipped with nuclear warheads.
