Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the murder of Russian politician Boris Nemtsov
February 27, 2015
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement after learning of the shooting death of former Russian Deputy Prime Minister and leading opposition politician Boris Nemtsov:
“I was shocked and saddened to learn of the murder in Moscow this evening of leading Russian opposition figure and former Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov.
“Mr. Nemtsov will be remembered as a fearless advocate of democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Russia. A leader unafraid to voice essential truths, even in the face of violent intimidation, he was also a prominent opponent of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and the illegal occupation of Crimea.
“On behalf of Canadians, I extend my profound condolences to Mr. Nemtsov’s family, friends and associates. Those responsible for this brazen crime must be held to account in a swift, transparent and independent investigation.
“In this shameful act of violence, the Russian people have lost an important voice in their country’s political debate.
“Tonight, Canada honours Mr. Nemtsov’s courage and his dedication to building a free, just and open society in Russia. His example will undoubtedly continue to inspire others in his homeland and around the world.”

Nemtsov had evidence of Russia’s presence in Ukraine — Poroshenko
The Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov promised to disclose evidence of the participation of Russian armed forces in the conflict in the Donbas, President Petro Poroshenko said on February 28.
“A few weeks ago I had a conversation with him on how to build relations between Ukraine and Russia as we would like to see them. Boris declared that he was going to disclose compelling evidence of the participation of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine. Someone was really afraid of that. Boris was not afraid. The executioners were afraid, and they killed him,” Poroshenko said.
According to Poroshenko, Nemtsov was a “great friend of Ukraine and a great patriot of Russia, a person who was like a bridge connecting our two countries. (A person) who created the kinds of relations between Ukraine and Russia that Ukrainians would like to see.”
Most of all, Nemtsov was a symbol of a Russian who treated Ukraine with sincerity and respect, a person who fought and gave everything to protect freedom in his country, he added.
“On March 1, he was supposed to head up a march of several thousands to demonstrate that there is a different Russia that loves Ukraine, that respects human rights, and for whom freedom is not an empty word. And he was ready to give his life for freedom and democracy,” Poroshenko concluded.

Ukrainian photo journalist killed in Donbas
Sergii Nikolaiev, senior photographer of Segodnya daily Ukrainian newspaper, died of wounds after a land mine exploded at the front line of Russia's war against Ukraine on Feb. 28.
The tragedy occurred in the village of Pisky located just 1.5 kilometers from Donetsk airport, which is now controlled by separatists.
“He was brought to the hospital of Krasnoarmiysk city alive, but the doctor said his wounds were fatal," a source in Segodnia newspaper told the Kyiv Post without giving the name as he wasn't authorized to work with the press. It was not immediately clear, whether Nikolayev worked in the east on assignment of Segodnia.
Nikolaiev, 43, was covering numerous conflict zones, including wars in Georgia, Libya, Syria and Somalia.
He has become the first Ukrainian journalist, who was killed in war in eastern Ukraine and the seventh one of the entire journalists' death toll of this war. Five journalists from Russian and one from Italy were killed in this war last year
